SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Western New England College freshman center Lisa Masella of Newtown was named to the 2003 All-Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Women's Basketball Second Team.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Western New England College freshman center Lisa Masella of Newtown was named to the 2003 All-Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Women’s Basketball Second Team.

Masella, a psychology major, led the Golden Bears in scoring (13.8 avg.) and was second in rebounding (8.6) this past season. She also led the squad in field-goal percentage (52.2). Masella scored in double figures 20 times and compiled eight double-doubles. She posted season highs of 26 points against Emmanuel College and 19 rebounds against Daniel Webster College.

Western New England College posted an 18-10 record that was the third highest win total in the program’s 27-year history. The Golden Bears also recorded their 300th all-time victory against Simmons College. WNEC finished third in the GNAC during the regular season with a 9-3 mark and placed second in the GNAC Tournament for the first time in school history.

Burkhart Fans 13

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Sophomore Gregg Burkhart of Newtown struck out 13 in a complete-game performance and classmate Matt Long singled in the game-winning runs as Muhlenberg College came from behind to edge Moravian, 6-5.

Burkhart allowed only five hits – none after the fourth inning – and one earned run. He struck out seven of the last eight batters, including the final five, to match the most whiffs by a Mule hurler since Steve Rau fanned 13 against Swarthmore in 1994. Burkhart struck out 11 batters in his last start and has 24 Ks in 171/3  innings this season.
