Newtown VFW Post 308 Senior Vice Commander Brendan Dlouhy announced Newtown High School 2013 graduates Kate Rebman and Mark Todd as recipients of $500 scholarships during a short ceremony on Monday, August 19.

“We’re very proud of the essays that they wrote,” said Mr Dlouhy.

Through the VFW Post 308’s efforts, Mr Dlouhy said it both furthers veterans causes and supports the community.

Kate and Mark each earned a $500 scholarship through writing essays on what a veteran means to them.

Kate’s essay focused on memories of her father, VFW Post 308 Commander James Rebman, and Mark’s essay focused on his grandfather, who served in the Korean War.

First Selectman Pat Llodra was in attendance at the ceremony. Speaking briefly, Mrs Llodra said both Kate and Mark’s essay, which were read during the ceremony, shared personal stories of honoring veterans. Though the stories were personal, Mrs Llodra said they will showed a universal respect for veterans that everyone can connect to.

Kate will attend Central Connecticut State University this fall, and Mark will attend Naugatuck Valley Community College.
