Gerald J. Frawley Dies at Age 74
Gerald J. Frawley, 74, a longtime member and former chairman of the Newtown Police Commission, died October 2 at his home at 24 Taunton Lake Road, Newtown. He was the husband of Joyce (Collier) Frawley and the father of Timothy Frawley, Mary Grace Polson, and Virginia James, all of Newtown.
Mr Frawley was born in Elmira, N.Y., on December 4, 1924, a son of the late Edward and Alice (Keating) Frawley.
He had worked for many years at Dolly Madison Industries and was last employed by the Hudson Paper Company.
Mr Frawley was a Navy veteran of World War II.
He was a resident of Newtown for 32 years and was a longtime Newtown public official. He served on the Board of Selectmen from 1973 to 1976. In 1976, he was elected to the Police Commission and served as chairman from 1988 to 1990. He was honored with a testimonial dinner for his 22 years of service on the Police Commission last November, when he left the Commission due to illness.
Mr Frawley was a longtime active member of the Newtown Lions Club and had served in many different capacities on the local and state levels. He was awarded the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award from Lions International in 1996. Mr Frawley was an active member of St Rose of Lima Church in Newtown.
Besides his wife of 53 years, he is survived by two other sons and a daughter, Robert Frawley of Saratoga Springs, N.Y., Gregory Frawley of Danbury, and Alice Frawley of Huntington, L.I., N.Y.; three brothers, Carroll Frawley of McLean, Va., Donald Frawley and J. Robert Frawley of Elmira, N.Y.; a sister, Sister Clare Frawley of Escondido, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Rose Alice Frawley.
Funeral services were held October 6 at 10 am from the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street, Newtown, to St Rose of Lima Church for a Mass of Christian Burial. Burial was in St Rose Cemetery.
