The Newtown Middle School held its Student Council elections on Friday, October 30, and by the end of the day the school's council president, vice president, treasurer, and spokesperson were announced.

Candidates for president were John Godino, Adam Guerin, Rylee Harrell, and Pam Lalli. Vice president candidates were Sawyer Findley, Jordan Gomes, Rushil Jerfy, Anna Romano, and Nate Wheeler. Treasurer candidates were Richie Gairing, Catie Gregory, Remi Pimentel, and Evan Wologodzew. Spokesperson candidates were Tyler DiMartino, Ava Schwartz, Mikey Sereday, and Lauren Yoder.

NMS Student Council advisors Nadia Papalia, Elizabeth Iaciofano, and Abigail Olsen oversaw assemblies in the morning that introduced all of the candidates up for election.

Each candidate was given time to introduce themselves and say why they think they would be a good choice for the school's Student Council.

After the assemblies students returned to their clusters and voted for their chosen candidates.

By the end of the day, John Godino had been voted as president, Rushil Jerfy and Nate Wheeler were voted as co-vice presidents, Catie Gregory was voted as treasurer, and Tyler DiMartino was voted as spokesperson.

“You have a few good options for president this year,” said John during one of the assemblies in the morning, “but I think I would be the best choice.”

John continued, saying the most important job of the Student Council president is to make sure everyone is or wants to be included. He also said leaders need to hear from the people they represent, and because of that he said he would support having suggestion boxes added to each classroom at the school.

“I would make sure the council is doing things that you,Newtown Middle School, would want,” John promised.

John said he hopes as Student Council president to “push the boundaries” of the limits the group may have.

“I'm extremely grateful for your time, and if you want to make NMS a better place, go with Godino,” he finished.

Newtown Middle School eighth grader John Godino spoke during an assembly on Friday, October 30, about why he would make a good president for the school's Student Council.
