A Danbury woman died due to injuries she suffered in a late-night one-car accident on Easter Sunday at the western intersection of Mt Pleasant Road and Sedor Lane.
Motorist Emily Christine Ewert, 24, of Danbury was driving a 1993 Toyota Camry sedan westward on Mt Pleasant Road about 11:09 pm, when the vehicle struck some curbing on the right side of Mt Pleasant Road, near its eastern intersection with Sedor Lane, police said.
The Toyota then swerved to the left, crossed Mt Pleasant Roadâs center line, and swerved back to the right, went into a slide, and struck some curbing on the right side of the road which caused the vehicle to roll over onto its roof, partially crushing the roof, police said. The auto came to rest upturned on the western end of Sedor Lane.
The accident occurred in an area where the westbound lane of Mt Pleasant Road makes a downhill curve to the left. In that area, Mt Pleasant Road has one westbound lane and two eastbound lanes.
Ms Ewert, who was alone, was not wearing a seat belt, police said. The Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps treated Ms Ewert at the scene and then transported her to Danbury Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, police said.
Ms Ewert, who was a student at Western Connecticut State University in Danbury, worked as a waitress at The Inn at Newtown.
A spokeswoman for the Chief State Medical Examinerâs Office in Farmington said Tuesday the results of an autopsy indicate that Ms Ewert died accidentally due to blunt head trauma. Police said the accident remains under investigation.
Police said they received a call from a motorist who encountered the upturned sedan, reporting to them that an accident had occurred, so they rapidly went to the scene.Â
Police said there are no known witnesses to the accident. Police ask any witnesses to the accident, or anyone who has information about it, to contact them at 426-5841.
Police called in their accident reconstruction team to investigate the crash. The unit stayed at the scene until 4 am to collect evidence to be used in the investigation. Police said that the accident is under investigation.
Hawleyville firefighters provided nighttime illumination for the investigation. Traffic was diverted from the area while the investigation was underway.
Lieutenant James Mooney, who headed the investigation, said police are analyzing tire marks that were left on the roadway due to the accident. Many aspects of the accident are under investigation, he said.
âIt was a tragedy,â said Police Chief Michael Kehoe.
