Curtiss House To Be Open, Just In Time For The Holidays
Curtiss House To Be Open,
Just In Time For The Holidays
Newtown Historical Society will participate in the Newtown Youth & Family Services Annual Holiday House Tour by hosting an open house at its headquarters, The Matthew Curtiss House, on Sunday, December 5.
The public is invited to visit and tour the building at 44 Main Street any time between 11 am and 5 pm, the same hours of the Holiday Festival.
Junior and senior docents will be available to answer questions about the house and its history and will provide guided tours by request.
There will also be a story telling event Sunday afternoon. Before television, movies, or computer games, our ancestors spent time spinning and sharing stories. Visitors to The Matthew Curtiss House will be invited to grab a cup of warm cider and settle into a comfortable seat while listening to a story or two. Various storytellers of all ages will be visiting.
Admission is free. However, donations are welcome and appreciated.Â
The house/museum, a fine example of Connecticut saltbox architecture, was constructed circa 1750 and purchased by Matthew Curtiss, Jr, in 1781. In Newtown Historical Society purchased the house in 1970 and restored its to its original condition.
Newtown Historical Society is a nonprofit, all-volunteer organization. During the year open house events are offered with living history demonstrations. The society also sponsors a lecture series, a summer history camp for kids, and many special events. All funding comes from private donations, membership dues, bequests and fundraisers such as the antiques show, house and garden tour, and publication sales.
New members are always welcome and volunteers are needed to help organize and run events. To join or for more information, visit NewtownHistory.org or leave a message at 203-426-5937.
