Andrew Buzzi To Fill School Bd. Vacancy

Newtown Board of Education members voted unanimously to approve the appointment of Andrew J. Buzzi, Jr, to fill the Board of Education seat left vacant by the resignation of Sheila Stickles last month.

Mr Buzzi is not new to public service. He currently serves as the chairman for the Public Building and Site Commission, a position he will have to give up to serve on the Board of Education. Mr Buzzi will fill the remainder of Mrs Stickles’ term, which would have been up at the end of this year.

Joining the Board of Education team interested Mr Buzzi because he wants to help and be involved with the community that he lives in as much as he can.

“I want to help. I feel very strongly about being a part of the community you live in,” he said. “Hopefully I’ll be able to bring some ideas and perspective to the board to help accomplish its goals.”

Mr Buzzi and his wife Michele have three children, Harrison, Rachel, and Andrew. The new board member says he wants to be a part of the continuation of “good schools and quality education.”

It will be a bit of a change serving on the Board of Education compared to the Public Building and Site Commission, Mr Buzzi noted, adding that he looks forward to working with the other members and new challenges.

“The responsibilities are broader on the Board of Education. They deal with so many different things,” he said. “The Public Building and Site Commission is more limited in scope.”

Current board members are glad Mr Buzzi will be joining the board and feel he has a lot to offer the community.

“I think Andy will be an asset to the board,” Earl Gordon said. “His morals and high levels of ethics will be an excellent asset.”

Vice chairman Vincent Saviano agreed. “His experience with the Building and Site Commission will be helpful,” Mr Saviano said. “I’m thankful we all agreed to accept Andy [to the board].”

Mr Buzzi is an attorney. He moved to Newtown in 1986. He also is a den leader for Cub Scouts Pack 70, a member of the Newtown Republican Town Committee where he served as vice chairman from March 2000 to February 2002, and he is a constable.
