Newtown High School’s girls’ basketball team defeated host Bethel 43-36 on January 15, and topped host Immaculate of Danbury 51-30, on January 19, to improve to 8-4 overall.

Lauren Wilcox dropped in 12 points and played solid defense, holding Bethel’s top player to seven points, five of which came from the free throw line, said Newtown Coach Jeremy O’Connell, adding that his team displayed tremendous second-half energy and passion.

Mail Klorczyk also had a dozen points, and Rylee Mulligan added nine points to go along with six rebounds, four assists, and a pair of steals.

Against Immaculate, Newtown had a complete team effort, said O’Connell, whose team was led by Klorczyk’s 29 points, a career-high 12-for-13 performance from the field, and seven rebounds. Haley Ryan added 12 points, and Olyvia Shaw pulled down ten rebounds.

The Nighthawks have won six of their last seven contests and are scheduled to continue a stretch of four consecutive games away from home with a visit to Bunnell of Stratford on Friday, January 22, and a visit to New Milford on Tuesday, January 26. The Nighthawks are slated to return home on Friday, January 29 when Joel Barlow of Redding visits. All of the games are scheduled to begin at 7 pm.
