Two Garner Inmates Arrested On Assault Charges

State police report they arrested two inmates at Garner Correctional Institution on August 15 in connection with separate assaults at the state’s high-security prison for men on Nunnawauk Road.

At 6:17 pm, state police received a call from Garner to investigate an assault against a correction officer.

State police said that inmate Rogelio Medina, 34, pulled correction officer James Durkin’s arm into a food passageway on a cell door and threw an unknown substance onto the officer.

State police charged Medina with third degree assault and with making a threat involving a hazardous substance. Medina was scheduled to appear in Danbury Superior Court the following day for arraignment on the charges.

Medina is serving a seven-year prison term on a conviction for possession of child pornography, according to the state Department of Correction (DOC).

In another incident on August 15, state police were called to Garner in connection with an inmate assault against a correction officer.

State police said inmate Chaz O. Gulley, 20, allegedly assaulted correction officer Howard Burritt. State police charged Gulley with third degree assault.

Following the incident, Gulley was transferred to Northern Correctional Institution in  Somers, which has a higher security rating than Garner.

State police Gulley is scheduled for court arraignment on August 29.

Gulley is serving a four-year prison term on a second degree robbery conviction, according to DOC.
