'City Of Angels' Earns Three Musical Theater Awards

WATERBURY — Newtown High School’s musical production of City of Angels, which ran March 19-22, received three awards at the Annual Connecticut High School Musical Theater Awards, which was held at the Palace Theater in Waterbury on June 1.

The award winners were announced during the gala. The NHS production had been nominated for 14 awards.

“It was a wonderful night filled with amazing performances,” said Jane Matson, the production’s director and the high school’s choral director.

Newtown students were among the multiple performers during the event.

City of Angels earned awards for Outstanding Student Orchestra, The Angel City Singers won for Outstanding Small Ensemble, and Brett Boles won for Outstanding Musical Direction.

Along with its winning categories, City of Angels was nominated in the following categories:

*Outstanding Costuming Achievement (Bonnie Johnson);

*Outstanding Lighting Design Achievement (Stef Carr);

*Outstanding Set Design Achievement (Abby Callery, Jane Matson, Bill Mangold);

*Outstanding Sound Design (Tim Mammen);

*Outstanding Direction (Jane Matson);

*Outstanding Leading Actor (Kyle Watkins);

*Outstanding Supporting Actress (Emily Crebbin);

*Outstanding Chorus;

*Outstanding Featured Performer (Aimee Talbot);

*Outstanding Lobby Display; and

*Outstanding Production of The Year.

Newtown High School’s musical production of City of Angels ran from Thursday, March 19, through Sunday, March 22, with one cancellation, due to snow, on Friday, March 20.

Newtown High School students rehearsed on Tuesday, March 17, for the high school’s then upcoming musical production of City of Angels.
