Dr Mark N. Mueller

Dr Mark Noble Mueller, 66, husband of Jean Ann (Scherping) Mueller, died

January 7 at his home in Salt Lake City. He was the brother of Margaret

Rundlof of Sandy Hook.

He was born February 5, 1932, in New York City, son of Dr Sterling and E.

Louise Mueller.

Educated at Harvey School, Hotchkiss, Princeton University, Colgate

University, and Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons, he completed his

internship and residency at the University of Chicago, a fellowship in the

rheumatic diseases in 1964 at the University of Chicago, and a doctoral

fellowship in microbiology and immunology at Yale University in 1967. From

1967 to 1976 he was a member of the University of Wisconsin department of

medicine, associate professor of medicine and radiology, serving at head of

the rheumatology section of the department of medicine from 1973 to 1976.

In 1976 Dr Mueller moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, to serve as an associate

professor of medicine at the University of Utah College of Medicine. He served

on the clinical faculty of the University of Utah, and from 1982 to 1998

operated a private practice. He was a member of several medical foundations,

societies and associations.

In addition to his wife and sister, he is survived by four children, Britt

Kristen Freitag of Pittsburgh, Pa., Laura Elizabeth Kroll of Evergreen, Colo.,

Mark Ainsley Noble Mueller of Vail, Colo., and John Locke Sterling Mueller of

Salt Lake City, Utah; four grandchildren, Samuel, Melissa, Alexander and

Bailey; a brother, Dr Peter Mueller of Princeton, N.J.; and three other

sisters, Rosamond Dauer of North Hampton, Mass., Anne Mueller Foote of

Rowayton, and Jean J. Mueller Tillinghast of West Hartford; and a

mother-in-law, Ruth Scherping of Manitowoc, Wisc.

A memorial service was held January 11, at First Unitarian Church, 569 S. 1300

Ruth F. Smith

Ruth F. Smith, 86, wife of the late Donald T. Smith, of 6 Sunset Hill Road,

Newtown, died January 20, in the Danbury Hospital. She was the mother of

Robert W. Smith of Newtown.

She was born in Shaftsburg, Vt., December 6, 1912, daughter of the late Harry

and Edith (Strong) Farnham.

Mrs Smith was a resident of Newtown since 1957. She was a member of the

Newtown Congregational Church, a former driver for Meals on Wheels, member of

the League of Women Voters, the Salvation Army Service Unit, and Food Pantry.

For several years she served papers for the Newtown Probate Court.

In addition to her son, she is survived by another son, David F. Smith of

Boulder Crest, Calif.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at the Newtown Congregational Church January

23, at 2 pm. Interment will be in Newtown Village Cemetery in the spring.

Hospital Avenue, Danbury, CT 06810.

Janet A. French

Janet Anderheggen French, of Alstead, N.H., born September 5, 1928, died

January 19, in her sleep at home following a long battle with cancer.

Mrs French, a Goucher College graduate, had been a resident of Newtown and

Ridgefield prior to moving to New Hampshire.

Her career included working as a learning disabilities teacher in Wilton, and

then in private practice as a psychotherapist. She was interested in horses as

well as being an accomplished musician.

In New Hampshire, she served on the Board of Trustees and as president of the

Monadnock Area Pastoral Counseling Services.

Mrs French is survived by her husband, Carroll Davies French of New Hampshire;

a son, Chris Anderheggen of Brookfield, daughter Lise Anderheggen-Lief,

son-in-law William Lief, and granddaughter Gabrielle Lief, all of Seattle,

Wash.; and her step-daughters, Alice Jacobs of Buffalo, N.Y., and Susan Files

of South Africa.

A memorial service will be held at Second Congregational Church in East

Alstead, N.H., on January 30 at noon. There are no visiting hours.

The Foley Funeral Home, 49 Court Street, Keene, N.H., is in charge of

arrangements.

Richard S. Young

Richard S. Young, 71, of Brookfield, died January 20 at Danbury Hospital

shortly after being admitted. He was the husband of Ruth Hanson Young and the

father of Frank S. Young of Newtown.

Mr Young was born in Ridgefield, March 22, 1927, son of the late Richard M.

and Hazel (Pettit) Young. He was educated in Danbury schools. He was a Navy

Veteran of WWII and served in Japan. He worked for the highway department in

Brookfield for 25 years and retired at the age of 62.

Besides his wife and son, he is survived by two other sons, Richard E. of

South Britain, and Thomas R. of Danbury; four daughters, Ruth A. Arbitelle of

Danbury, Joan L. Massey of Nebo, N.D., and Jane E. Young and Nancy J.

Spallone, both of Naugatuck; four grandchildren, Robert, Sarah and Josh

Massey, and Kaitlin Spallone; and several nieces and nephews. He was

predeceased by his granddaughter, Courtney Marie Young.

Calling hours will be held at Cornell Memorial Home, 247 White Street,

Danbury, on January 22 from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 pm. There is no funeral planned.

Cremation will take place at the convenience of the family.

Catherine S. Wasson

Catherine (Sheehan) Wasson, wife of Robert Bruce Wasson of Huntington Beach,

Calif., and daughter of Phyllis and Charles Speidel of Taunton Lane, Newtown,

died January 10, at the West Anaheim Medical Center, Anaheim, Calif.,

following an illness of two months.

She was the sister of Diane Benton of Newtown.

She was born December 19, 1945, in Richmond Hill, N.Y., and graduated Richmond

Hill High School in 1963, Quinnipiac College, Hamden, in 1967, and Florida

State University, Tallahassee, in 1973. Following graduation, she and her

husband moved to California.

Mrs Wasson was predeceased by her mother, Maureen Keenaghan Speidel, in 1958

and an infant son, Ryan, in 1982.

In addition to her husband of 25 years, she is survived by three children,

Travis, Colin and Meghan.

She is also survived by two other sisters, Gay Suzanne Alvarez of Sewanee,

Tenn., and Corinne Speidel of Dillingham, Alaska; and her brother,

Christopher, of Durham, N.C.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated January 15 at St Bonaventure Church,

Huntington Beach, followed by burial near her son Ryan in Good Shepherd

Cemetery, Huntington Beach, California.

Mildred Kopchak

Mildred Kopchak, 80, of Coolridge Road, Milford, wife of Andrew Kopchak, died

January 15, in Bridgeport Hospital after a brief illness. She was the mother

of Andrew Kopchak of Newtown.

Born August 9, 1918, in Bridgeport, daughter of the late Charles and Veronica

Morgan, she was a longtime Milford resident. She was a member of Milford

Senior Citizens, active in the Senior Bowling Leagues and a member of St

Mary's Church.

In addition to her husband and son, survivors include four other sons,

Michael, Robert, Alan, and Thomas Kopchak, all of Milford; seven daughters,

Jean Goodwin and Margaret Kopchak, both of Milford, Dorothy Zargo and Marilyn

Dennis, both of North Branford, Rita Gleason of Stratford, Elaine Haslob of

Monroe, and Catherine Bromley of Fairfield; 38 grandchildren; and 27

great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by one daughter, Anne Sauer; one

grandson, Erich Kruger; two great-grandchildren, Terri Young and Robert Zargo,

III; and two brothers and two sisters.

A Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated January 19 in St Mary's Church,

Milford. Interment was in St Mary's Cemetery.

The Cody-White Funeral Home, 107 Broad Street, on the Green, Milford, was in

Hugh J. Quinn

Hugh J. Quinn, 71, died January 17 in Danbury Hospital of injuries suffered in

a fall on the ice outside his home on Deerfield Drive in Sandy Hook. He was

the husband of Virginia (Doughty) Quinn of Sandy Hook and the brother of

Dorothy Cavanaugh of Newtown.

He was born in Bridgeport, January 10, 1928, son of the late Hugh and Jessie

(Schoenberger) Quinn. A resident of Newtown since childhood, he was a graduate

of Newtown High School. He was a retired truck driver for Baskin-Robbins in

Southbury.

An Army veteran of World War II, he was attached to the honor squad protecting

the headquarters of General Douglas McArthur. He was long active in the

operation of the Faith Food Pantry at St John's Episcopal Church, Sandy Hook.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Newtown.

He is survived, besides his wife and sister, by two sons, Hugh Quinn, III, of

Vestavia Hills, Ala., and David Quinn of Wappingers Falls, N.Y.; one daughter,

Kelly E. Quinn of Litchfield; one brother, Robert Quinn of Miami, Fla.;

another sister, Catherine Whyte of Clearwater, Fla.; two grandchildren; and

several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street, Newtown,

on January 20. Cremation followed.

Joan A. Abalan

Joan (Arnold) Abalan, 70, of Heritage Village, Southbury, died on January 18,

at her home. She was the wife of the late Richard M. Abalan. She was a former

employee of The Newtown Bee .

Mrs Abalan was born August 19, 1928, in Bridgeport, daughter of the late

Raymond S. and Margaret (Carley) Arnold. She was a graduate of Milford High

School and the Whitney School of Art in New Haven, now the Paier School of

Art. She started her career as a fashion illustrator for Saks Fifth Avenue in

New York City. She became the director of marketing and development for the

Candlewood Theater in New Milford, and later sold real estate in the Stamford

and New Haven area.

Most recently she was a sales representative for The Heritage Villager

newspaper, and previously worked for The Litchfield County Times , The New

Milford Times , The Newtown Bee, and the Housatonic Publishing Company,

involved in advertising design, production and sales. She moved to Heritage

Village in 1990. Her hobbies included swimming, theater, jazz and classical

music.

She leaves one son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Susan Abalan of Orange; her

daughter and son-in law, Christine and Ned Spalding of Southbury; her

daughters, Diane Abalan of New Haven, Jody Abalan of Southbury and Sara Abalan

of New York City; one sister, Mary Jane Johnson of Milwaukee, Ore.; and two

grandchildren, Erin and Josh Spalding.

A funeral mass was held January 20, at Sacred Heart Church, Main Street South,

Southbury. Burial was in St Mary's Cemetery, Milford.

Arrangements were by Carpino Funeral Home, 750 Main Street South, Southbury.

Dr Benjamin Zolov

Dr Benjamin Zolov, of Portland, Me., died January 18, at Filosa Nursing Home,

Danbury, after a brief illness. He was the father of Dr David Zolov of

Newtown.

Dr Zolov, a retired physician, was predeceased by his wife of 56 years, Edith

Goodman Zolov. Dr Zolov was born December 12, 1909, in Portland, Me., a son of

Samuel and Sadie Tabachnick Zolov. He attended Bowdoin College, and graduated

from Tufts Medical School, class of 1934, where he was a member of Phi Delta

Epsilon Medical Fraternity.

In 1936, he went into private practice in Portland. After additional training

in allergy, he served on the allergy staff at the Boston Dispensary. He

remained in private practice until his retirement in 1994.

In 1982, he was recognized for his outstanding contribution to the Barron

Center (formerly Portland City Hospital), where he served as medical director

from 1945-95, by having the Dr Benjamin Zolov Skilled Care Unit named in his

honor.

He was the chief of the Allergy Clinic at the Maine Medical Center from

1949-1981, first president of the Portland City Hospital Medical Staff, and a

staff member at the Maine Medical Center and Mercy Hospital.

Dr Zolov was a past president of the Portland Medical Club, medical examiner

for Cumberland County, a captain in the US Public Health Reserve and assistant

clinical professor of medicine at Tufts Medical College. He was a member and

former officer of several medical associations and societies.

Dr Zolov was the author of 15 articles on allergy and research.

In 1954 and in 1981, Dr Zolov received awards from the New England Regional

Board of the Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith for his outstanding

contributions. He was largely responsible for the passage of the first

anti-discrimination law passed by Maine in 1959.

In 1987, Dr Zolov received the "Keys to the City," in Portland for service to

the hospital. Dr Zolov was a former chairman of the Maine Equal Opportunity

Committee. He was also a member and former officer of Jewish Federation of

Portland, Jewish Community Center, New England Regional Board of the

Anti-Defamation League, Maine State Council of B'nai B'rith, Jewish Home for

the Aged, board of directors of Temple Beth-El, Temple Beth-El Brotherhood,

and trustee, Portland Regional organization on Poverty.

In addition to his son, he is survived by two daughters, Donna Silverman of

New York City, and Deborah Migdol of Brookfield; eight grandsons; and four

great-grandchildren.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the Barron Center, 1145 Brighton

Avenue, Portland, Me. 04102, or to Temple Beth-El, 400 Deering Avenue,

Portland, Me. 04103.

Funeral services were held on January 21 at Temple Beth-El. Interment was in

Temple Beth-El Memorial Park in Portland. Arrangements were by the Honan

Funeral Home, 58 Main Street, Newtown.

Margaret K. Joy

Margaret (Keegan) Joy, 84, of 2800 Whitney Avenue, Hamden, mother of Joseph

Joy of Sandy Hook, died January 13 in Connecticut Hospice after a long

illness.

She was the wife of the late Daniel J. Joy. She was a supervisor many years

ago with the former A.C. Gilbert Co., and was an employee of the former New

York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad. She was a longtime parishioner of St

Francis Church and a life member of its Rosary Society.

In addition to her son, Mrs Joy is survived by one sister, Doris K. Perry of

New Haven; one brother, Edward F. Keegan of Jewitt City; three grandchildren;

and one great-grandson. She was predeceased by two sisters, Emma Twohill and

Lillian Vitali, and two brothers, Leslie and John Keegan.

Arrangements were by Clancy Funeral Home in East Haven.
