Longtime Policeman Resigns Position

By Andrew Gorosko

A longtime town police officer who was facing an unspecified disciplinary action by the Police Commission has resigned from the police department.

Patrol Officer Dana Schubert, 53, in a February 8 letter resigned his post.

Mr Schubert was hired as Newtown police officer in January 1998. Preceding that, he had worked as a police officer at Western Connecticut State University in Danbury for 20 years.

Attempts to reach Mr Schubert for comment were unsuccessful.

Asked why Mr Schubert was facing disciplinary action by the Police Commission, Police Chief Michael Kehoe said that any punishment that exceeds 15 days of suspension from the police department requires approval by the Police Commission. The police chief declined to discuss the specifics of the case.

The Police Commission conducted sessions on February 2 and February 7 to address the disciplinary matter, during which the topic was discussed in closed session.

In his February 8 letter of resignation, Mr Schubert wrote that he has served as youth officer, DARE instructor, child abuse investigator, high school resource officer, and a patrol officer during his law enforcement work in Newtown.

Mr Schubert expressed gratitude to citizens who have been supportive, encouraging, and generous in their thanks to him for having served them or their families.

“I hope my efforts have helped to make Newtown a better community for all to live in,” he added.
