American Cut Glass Tops Leighton's March 20 Sale
with 5 cuts
RIDGEWOOD, N.J. -- On Saturday, March 20, Leighton Galleries held their most
successful auction to date. Offered for sale to the highest bidder were a
fabulous collection of 270 lots of fine art, silver, estate jewelry, furniture
and decorative arts. An illustrated auction catalogue was available which
included an index of significant artists whose works were up for bid. Over 200
registered bidders filled the auction held at Christ Church. A record number
of sealed and phone bids from all over the US, and as far away as Scotland,
were executed by the Leighton Galleries' staff.
One of the auction's many highlights was a turn-of-the-century Libbey cut
glass vase which had generated considerable interest in the weeks prior to
auction. It was sold to a Maryland collector for $10,640. Top-selling fine art
prices included a painting by Arthur Parton titled "Before the Day is Gone,"
which brought $5,600, a French bronze sculpture by Mathurin Moreau "Figure of
Ondine" which sold for $4,480, and A. Leonardi's Nineteenth Century "Venus
Rising" oil on canvas which brought $2,240. Other top-selling items included a
pair of Victorian majolica vases selling for $1,569, a reverse-painted table
lamp selling for $1,456, a Nineteenth Century Rand McNally terrestrial library
globe selling for $980, an Art Nouveau porcelain amphora vase selling for
$840, an English mahogany rocking horse selling for $728, a Tiffany & Co
sterling repousse vanity box selling for $616, a Nantucket basket selling for
$308, and a 1988 Jaguar XJ6 brought $4,144. Prices quoted include the 12
percent buyers premium.
