Snapshot: Kate Sheehan
Occupation: I’m the head of technical services and systems librarian at C.H. Booth Library.
Family: My husband is Gary. We’ve been married for seven years. We have a son, Adrian, who is 2 years old.
Pets: We have a dog named Cooper. He is an elderly Collie, 12½ years old. And we have some fish.
How long have you been in Newtown? We live in Trumbull, and I’ve been at the library in Newtown just since this September.
What do you like to do in your free time? I am a sporadic writer, an occasional knitter, and I cook a lot. I tend to bake just in the cooler months. Now that I’m back at work, in a library, I’m getting my reading groove back.
What have you read recently? Sadly, most books lately have been about toddlers. I just read How Toddlers Thrive, and I recommend it to anyone with small children. It’s great. I love a lot of authors who write nonfiction, like Mary Roach and Bill Bryson, although I do love Tana French, too. And I have to mention Margaret Atwood as an author I like.
Do you have a favorite travel destination? I do. We went to Venice a couple of years ago, and I would go back in a heartbeat. I remember a quote from Marcel Proust, “When I went to Venice, my dream became my address.” It’s like that. It’s an ethereal, dreamy, watery place.
What is the best thing about Newtown? It’s such a delightful community. There is such a sense of pride in the town, and there is this current of artistic talent that goes on in this town. I can’t wait for Halloween on Main Street — everyone has told me about it.
Who has been the greatest influence in your life? Certainly, my parents. They are both social workers and that has done a lot toward how I view the world. I took a logic class in high school, too, that has influenced how I make decisions. I’m always asking myself if it is an emotional or logical decision, when I’m making up my mind.
Do you have a personal philosophy? I value kindness. I always think of the quote, and I forget who said it, “Be kind, because everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.” On the flip side, my dad always said something his professor told him, that we’re not a rational species, we’re a rationalizing one. I think about that a lot.
Do you have a guilty pleasure? I am trying very hard not to have guilty pleasures. We shouldn’t feel guilty about things we enjoy.
