Sandy Hook Community Honored At Mets Game
The New York Mets and Citibank hosted 50 Newtown children and their families for a youth baseball clinic prior to the Mets game against the Miami Marlins at Citi Field on September 15.
Newtown First Selectman Pat Llodra and founder and Director of Newtown Youth Academy Sports and Fitness Center Peter D’Amico were honored with Citi’s Teammates in the Community Award for their roles in helping strengthen the town of Newtown, following last December’s tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
Mets players Mike Baxter, Zach Wheeler, and Anthony Recker put on the clinic. The youngsters worked on hitting, outfield, and pitching drills with the trio of Mets. Citi also provided 200 tickets to the game for these families.
Toward the end of the clinic, Mets Captain David Wright grabbed two Newtown ballplayers to play catch and help in his rehabilitation efforts. The Mets went on to win in dramatic fashion, pulling out a 1-0 win in 12 innings.
