OBITS (Acquino; Doski; Moody; Costello; Matsis; Smith; Rains; Hager; Janoky)
Florence Acquino
Florence C. Acquino, 92, of East Norwalk, died June 8 at Norwalk Hospital.
She was the wife of the late Luke J. Acquino. She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y.,
May 11, 1906. She was the daughter of the late John and Felicia Carbone and
had lived in Norwalk for most of her life. She was retired from SNET where she
had worked for 40 years.
Mrs Acquino was a charter member of the Msgr Thomas J. Finn, Counsel 46
Columbiettes, a member of both the Rosary Society and High Life at St Thomas
the Apostle Church, a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and a
volunteer at the Soup Kitchen in South Norwalk.
Mrs Acquino is survived by a daughter, Mrs Clifford (Barbara) Andresen of
Norwalk; 2 brothers, Irving Carbone and Ernest Carbone; 2 sisters, Rose
Bucciarelli and Mary Tuozzolo, all of Norwalk; three grandchildren, Mary-Ellen
Calzone, Joan and John Andresen; four great-grandchildren and several nieces
and nephews.
She was predeceased by a brother, Eugene Carbone, and 3 sisters, Eleanor
Dellaca, Della Reynolds and Catherine Kerekes.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, June 13, 10 a.m. at St
Thomas the Apostle Church in East Norwalk with interment to follow at St John
Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Magner Funeral Home, 12 Mott Avenue on Friday, June
12, from 5-8 p.m.

Victor W. Doski, Jr
Victor William Doski, Jr, 79, of Sandy Hook, died June 7 at Glen Hill
Convalescent Center, Danbury.
He was divorced from the late Marion Banks Doski.
Mr Doski was born in Center Moriches, N.Y., March 8, 1919, the son of the late
Victor and Mary Savage Doski, Sr. From 1945 to 1997 he was a self-employed
craftsman and carpenter. He was a resident of Long Island, N.Y., for many
years before moving to Connecticut.
Mr Doski is survived by his longtime companion Ruth Sterling of Sandy Hook;
two sons, Richard B. Samuelson of Bethel and Gary P. Doski of Sandy Hook; two
daughters, Joyce J. Sokol of Danbury and Donna L. Schlank of Bethany; two
sisters, Sophie Fesnick and Helen Hulse both of Mariches, L.I., N.Y.; 11
grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.
Mass and burial will be on Long Island, N.Y. on June 12.

Burton E. Moody
Burton E. Moody, 77, father of Kathleen Moody Streett of Newtown, died June 5
in Lehigh Valley Hospital, Allentown, Pa.
He was the husband of Helen Moody of Allentown, Pa.
Born in Port Carbon, Pa., December 25, 1920, he was the son of the late Hiram
S. and Gertrude M. (Cooper) Moody. A World War II veteran, he served in the US
Army Air Force from 1940-1946.
Mr Moody graduated in 1950 from Pennsylvania State University with a degree in
chemical engineering. He was a chemical engineer for Air Products and
Chemicals Inc, Trexlertown, Pa. for 31 years, retiring in 1984. He received a
patent for the feeding of coal to high-pressure gasifiers. At Air Product, he
was employed in process engineering, technical services, business development,
and project management, serving as project manager for several cryogenic plant
design and construction projects in the United States. He also served for more
than two years as chief engineer for Air Products, Ltd. in England.
In addition to his wife and daughter, Kathleen, and her husband, J. Walter
Streett, he is survived by two granddaughters, Lora Kristen and Gretchen Ilse
Streett, both of Newtown; one sister, Gertrude Moody of Port Carbon, Pa.; and
one brother, John F. Moody, of Delran, N.J.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated June 10 in St Catherine of Siena
Cathedral in Allentown, Pa. Interment was in St Anthony's Cemetery, Port
Carbon, Pa. Trexler Funeral Home, Allentown, Pa. was in charge of
arrangements.

William J. Costello
William "Red" J. Costello, 75, father of Joan Reynolds of Newtown, died June 2
at his home in Cheshire after a long illness.
He was the husband of Virginia Jester Costello and the son of the late John
and Catherine O'Brien Costello. He was born in New Haven, October 16, 1922.
Mr Costello was an Army veteran of World War II and was employed by the US
Postal Service in New Haven for more than 34 years.
He was a member of the First Friday Crusade at St John the Evangelist Church.
Besides his wife and daughter, he is survived by two sons, Jack Costello of
Southington and William Costello, Jr, of Cheshire; two other daughters,
Kathleen Ferguson of Hamden and Maureen Kirk of Bristol; two sisters,
Catherine Montano of Milford and Dorothy Pellegrino of Cheshire; eight
grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Anne Sullivan and Helen Elder and a
brother, John Costello.

Andrew S. Matsis
Andrew S. Matsis, 74, father of Steven A. Matsis of Newtown, died June 5, at
Stamford Hospital.
He was the husband of Bertha Vorvis Matsis of Darien.
Mr Matsis was born August 23, 1923 in Hydra, Greece. He was the son of the
late Stelianos and Maria Grouaza Matsis.
He served in the Greek Merchant Marines from 1939 to 1946 before immigrating
to the United States.
He owned many restaurants in Stamford, but was best known for Andrea's
Restaurant, which he owned from 1955 to 1973.
He was a member of the Masonic Union Lodge No. 5 of Stamford and the Greek
organization AHEPA.
Besides his wife and son, he is survived by a daughter, Maria Matsis
Suffredini of Darien; two brothers, Nicholas and Charles Matsis, both of
Greece; an aunt, Codillo Grouaza of Greece, and five grandchildren.
Funeral services were held June 9 at the Church of The Archangels, Stamford
with burial following at Lakeview Cemetery, New Canaan.
Memorial donations may be made to the Church of the Archangels, 1527 Bedford
St, Stamford.

Hazel Smith
Hazel May Smith, 82, mother of Robert Smith and Marion E. Mead of Newtown,
died June 7 at Norwalk Hospital.
Born May 4, 1916, in Norwalk, she was the daughter of the late Horace and
Ethel Broadhurst Ferris.
Mrs Smith grew up in Norwalk, and was a 64-year resident of Darien. She worked
for 15 years as a butcher at First National Stores in Greenwich.
Besides her son and daughter, she is survived by another son, Harvey Smith of
Norwalk; two other daughters, Carolyn Byxbee of Ridgefield and Jane Ann Smith
of Monroe, N.C.; a sister, Myrtle E. Ferris, of Norwalk; 19 grandchildren and
14 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Harold F. Smith.
The Edward Lawrence Funeral Home, 2119 Post Road, Norwalk, was in charge of
arrangements.

Cecelia M. Rains
Cecelia Malhenzie Rains, 67, mother of Stacey Bombero, Sr of Newtown, died
June 5 in Connecticut Hospice, Branford.
Mrs Rains was born in Troop, Pa., and was a Bridgeport resident for most of
her life before moving to Derby four years ago.
She was the widow of Calvin Rains.
She was the former owner of CC's Card and Gift Shop.
Besides her daughter, Stacey, she is survived by another daughter, Teresa
Gucwa Sr, of Shelton; two sisters, Sophie Loch of Lakeville, Pa., and Florence
Skierski of Dixon City, Pa.; six grandchildren, Rebecca, Daniel Jr, Timothy
and Meagan Bombero and Cassandra and Stanley Cucwa Jr and several nieces and
nephews.
She was predeceased by a sister, Pearl Rusiniak.
Funeral services were held June 8 from the Cyril F. Mullins Trumbull Funeral
Home, 399 White Plains Road and St Margaret's Shrine. Interment in
Resurrection Cemetery.

Walter H. Hager, Sr
Walter H. Hager, 71, father of Walter H. Hager, Jr of Newtown, died June 7 at
his home in Bethel.
He was the husband of the late Mary H. Mrozinski Hager.
Mr Hager was born in Danbury, February 22, 1927, son of Walter D. and Jessie
Collier Hager. He attended Danbury schools and was a graduate of Danbury High
School. He lived most of his life in Bethel.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Navy.
Mr Hager was the owner and operator of the Walter Hager Sanitation Company for
45 years until illness forced him to retire.
He was a member of St Mary's Church, Bethel.
Besides his son, he is survived by a daughter, Mary-Lynn Hager of Westlake,
Calif., four brothers, Charles Hager of Danbury, Richard Hager of Va., Walter
Worth of Madson, Tenn., and Lawrence Hager of New Britain; three sisters,
Alice Lloyd of Bethel, Margie Crowley of Florida and Anita DiSarro of Alaska;
two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held Thursday, June 11, from 6 to 9 pm at the Cornell
Memorial Home, 247 White St., Danbury.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St Mary's Church, Bethel,
Friday, June 12, at 10 am. Entombment will follow at St Peter Cemetery Garden
Mausoleum, Danbury.

Alcye S. Janoky
Mrs Alcye Swarni Janoky, 78, of Nunnawauk Meadows died June 4 in Bethel Health
Care.
She was born in Bridgeport on November 9, 1919, the daughter of the late John
and Clara (Timko) Swarni.
She was a Newtown resident for the past 10 years and was last employed as a
clerk at Amaral Motors. An active resident of Nunnawauk Meadows, she led a
class in Line Dancing.
Mrs Janoky is survived by a daughter, Darlene Kerbe, of Danbury; a brother,
Albert J. Swarni, of Florida; two sisters, Betty Dobrovich of Shelton and
Irene Suhanosky of Milford; and three grandchildren, Noelle Roviello, and
Zachary and Tessa Kerbe.
A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St Rose Church June 15 at
11 am. Cremation will be at Mt Grove Crematory, Bridgeport.
Following the Mass, friends are invited to a reception at Port 5, 69 Brewster
St, Black Rock, Bridgeport, Conn.
