*Searching for Shakespeare⦠at the movies: This month the Searching For Shakespeare series will depart from its regular programming and offer instead a set of free movie screenings. Also, instead of being direct adaptations of Shakespeare, these moves are each loosely based on the stories of or about the Bard.
Join us on Wednesday, December 26, for 10 Things I Hate About You, a 1999 film starring Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles loosely based on The Taming of The Shrew; Thursday, December 27, for Sheâs the Man (2006), a modernization of Twelfth Night, or What You Will that stars Amanda Bynes; and Friday, December 28, for Shakespeare in Love, the 1998 film that won seven Oscars including Best Actress in a Lead Role for Gwyneth Paltrow and Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Judi Dench.
*Searching for Shakespeare in January: The âSearching for Shakespeareâ series will return to its regular offerings (lecture, discussion and film screening) in January with a focus on The Merchant of Venice.
Dr George Geckle will lecture on the play about a 16th Century merchant who must default on a loan from a bitter creditor. Dr Geckle is professor emeritus at the University of South Carolina, with strong ties to the Newtown community. He has written several books on Shakespeare and other literary subjects.
His lecture is planned for Tuesday, January 8, at 7 pm.
A screening of the 2004 film The Merchant of Venice, starring Al Pacino and Jeremy Irons, will be offered on Tuesday, January 15, at 7 pm.
*Putting Your Past on Paper: Thereâs an African proverb which says, âWhen an old man dies, a library burns down.â
Donât let your familyâs library burn down. Join us at the library for a memoir writing workshop with Linda Chiara on January 15, from 3 to 4:30 pm.
The program is free but we do request that you call the library at 426-4533 to let us know you plan on attending.

*Book Nook Note: Books make the perfect gift for everyone on your list! Fine gift-quality books at reasonable prices are available at The Book Nook, just around the corner from the main circulation desk.
