Gear Stolen

During the week of January 17, someone stole an electric generator from a garage at 68 Boggs Hill Road, police report. Police ask those with knowledge of who stole the equipment to contact them at 426-5841.

Acura Hits Pole

Motorist Matthew Taylor, 16, of 8 White Oak Farm Road, who was driving a 1993 Acura Legend eastward on a snowy Brushy Hill Road about 7:16 am January 27, lost control of the auto and then struck a utility pole along the westbound road shoulder, police said. Taylor was not injured. Police issued him written warnings for failure to drive to the right and for traveling too fast for conditions.

Subaru Damaged

Motorist Alfred Lanza, 55, of Plymouth returned to his parked 2000 Subaru Legacy at 25 Main Street at about 3:18 pm January 24, and found that the rear end and the driver’s side of the Subaru had been damaged by another vehicle. Police are investigating.

Hawleyville Road

Motorist Ayde McCube, 29, of New Milford, who was driving a 1998 Toyota Camry, was waiting to turn left from southbound Hawleyville Road into a private driveway about 7:43 am January 24, police said.

The Toyota was then struck from behind by a southbound 2000 International flatbed truck driven by Gregory Petriccione, 28, of Brookfield, according to police. There were no injuries.

Police issued Petriccione a written warning for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart. Police gave McCube an infraction ticket for driving without a license.

Swamp Road

Motorist Shane Silverman, 31, of 85 Riverside Road, who was driving a 1994 Toyota 4-Runner northward on Swamp Road about 10:30 am January 26, attempted to negotiate a curve, but slid on the snowy road and struck a utility pole, police said. Silverman was uninjured. Police verbally warned Silverman for making a restricted turn.

Flagpole Collision

Police report a two-vehicle accident at the Main Street flagpole about 3:30 pm January 25. The collision involved motorist Asim Ceylan, 41, of Danbury, who was driving a 1995 Mitsubishi Galant, and motorist David Buyers, 21, of 37 West Street, who was driving a 1998 Chevrolet Camaro, police report. There were no injuries. Police said they issued Ceylan a written warning for passing on the right. Police issued Buyers a written warning for failure to yield at an intersection.

Chevrolet Vs Saturn

Motorist Sara Jane Anderson, 24, of New Haven, who was driving a 2003 Saturn sedan, was stopped near 1-A Commerce Road for traffic at about 5:17 pm January 26, when a 1994 Chevrolet pickup truck driven by Paul Van Valkenburgh, 42, of Bethel, which was snowplowing a private parking lot, backed into the Saturn, police report.

There were no injuries. Police issued Van Valkenburgh a written warning for unsafe backing.

Larceny/Forgery

After he learned that police held a warrant for his arrest, Oliver Paynter, 17, of Bridgeport turned himself over to them on the afternoon of January 29 and was charged with one count of third degree larceny and nine counts of second degree forgery. All charges are felonies.

Police allege that beginning last April and continuing for four months, Paynter stole checks from a Sandy Hook residence and cashed them, illegally obtaining more than $2,500.

Paynter was released on a promise to appear for arraignment in Danbury Superior Court on February 16.

Speeding/Interfering

Police report they spotted Morris Simpson, 49, of Danbury speeding on Mt Pleasant Road on the night of January 30 and pursued him, stopping him on westbound Interstate 84.

After Simpson was stopped, he attempted to fight with one Newtown police officer and two state troopers, police said.

Police charged Simpson with speeding and with interfering with police. He was released on $250 bail for a February 15 court appearance.

Parking Lot

While it was parked in the parking lot at Newtown Shopping Village at 6 Queen Street between 10 pm January 28 and 2 am January 29, someone damaged a 2004 Ford owned by Elral, Inc, of Wayne N.J., police said. The damage was apparently caused by a motorist who drove into the Ford and then left the area. Police are investigating.

Subaru Vs Buick

Motorist Lawrence Tomasella, 57, of Ansonia, who was driving a 2002 Buick Rendezvous was slowly rolling westward in a line of traffic on westbound Wasserman Way, at its intersection with South Main Street about 11:11 am January 27, when westbound motorist Loretta McGahran, 48, of Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y., who was driving a 1998 Subaru Outback, struck the Buick’s rear end, police said.

There were no injuries. Police issued McGahran a written warning for following too closely and for failure to carry a driver’s license.

Bridge End Farm Lane

Police report an accident at the intersection of Bridge End Farm Lane and Walnut Tree Hill Road in Sandy Hook about 10:27 pm January 29.

Motorist John Scianna, 65, of Trumbull, who was driving a 2002 GMC Envoy drove to the end of Bridge End Farm Lane and then drove through a stop sign without stopping, colliding with a 2004 Dodge Stratus traveling on Walnut Tree Hill Road, which was driven by Kerry Kazmercyk, 33, of 5 Pomperaug Road, police said.

The Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported Kerry Kazmercyk and Dodge passenger John Kazmercyk, 13, of the same address, to Danbury Hospital for treatment of injuries, police said.

Police issued Scianna an infraction ticket for failure to obey a stop sign.

Berkshire Collision

Motorist Ralph Cirone, 42, of 3 Somerset Lane, who was driving a 1999 Acura CL-3.0 coupe westward on Berkshire Road about 2:40 pm January 24, told police that he observed an eastbound vehicle passing other eastbound vehicles in the westbound lane.

The Acura swerved to avoid a collision and struck some guardrailing, according to police. Cirone was uninjured. Police are investigating.

Main Street Crash

Motorist Barbara Baldino, 42, of 34 Old Farm Hill Road, who was driving a 2003 Honda Pilot sport-utility vehicle southward on Main Street about 4:07 pm January 28, stopped and was waiting to turn left onto Schoolhouse Hill Road, when the Honda was struck from behind by southbound motorist Travis Cuddy, 19, of Monroe, who was driving a 1994 Chevrolet S-10 utility truck, police report.

There were no injuries. Police gave Cuddy a written warning for following too closely.

Ford Hits Jeep

Motorist Sullivan Campbell, 39, of 41 Poverty Hollow Road, was driving a 2003 Jeep Cherokee northward on South Main Street and then stopped to make a left turn onto Elm Drive at about 1:30 pm January 27, when the Jeep was struck from behind by northbound motorist Marianne Malanaphy, 23, of 91 Alberts Hill Road, who was driving a 2000 Ford escort, police report.

There were no injuries. Police issued Malanaphy a written warning for driving at an unsafe distance and for failure to carry a driver’s license.

Marijuana

State police said that after they stopped a vehicle on westbound Interstate 84, east of Exit 11, at about 4 pm January 25, they charged a passenger of the vehicle with drug violations.

State police charged Jessica McClure, 29, of Winsted with possession of marijuana and with possession of drug paraphernalia. McClure was released on $500 bail for a February 7 court appearance.

On-Ramp Accident

Motorist Michael Killeen, 44, of 47 Parmalee Hill Road, who was driving a 2005 Audi station wagon, was traveling on westbound Interstate 84’s Exit 9 on-ramp about 9:15 am, January 27, and struck a parked unoccupied 1990 Pontiac there, state police said. Killeen was not injured.

 

Illegal Purchases

On January 31, police arrested Alberto Gulst, 32, of 21 Platts Hill Road on a warrant, charging him with fourth degree larceny and with illegal use of a credit card.

Police said Gulst obtained credit card numbers from a local business and then used those numbers to illegally buy items on the Internet. Fourth degree larceny involves the theft of between $500 and $1,000.

Police held Gulst on $50,000 bail for a February 1 court arraignment.

Sideswiped

At about 5:26 pm February 1, motorist Jeffrey Bell, 18, of 26 Farm Field Ridge Road, who was driving a 1995 Nissan Maxima westward near 11 Berkshire Road drifted into that road’s eastbound lane and sideswiped an eastbound 1991 Chevrolet Suburban driven by Adolf Dreher, 68, of 21 Cedarhurst Trail, police said.

There were no injuries. Police issued Bell an infraction ticket for failure to drive to the right.

Mazda Into Ditch

Motorist Duncan P. Brown, Jr, 51, of 7 Sycamore Drive, who was driving a 1996 Mazda 626 southward near 165 Huntingtown Road about 7 pm January 31, crossed that road’s centerline and went off the northbound road shoulder, entering a ditch, police said.

Brown was not injured. Police issued Brown an infraction for failure to drive to the right.

Warrant

Newtown police said Shelton police stopped motorist Matthew Vilanova, 18, of Monroe in Shelton on February 2 for a motor vehicle violation, after which Shelton police learned that Vilanova was wanted by Newtown police.

Newtown police took custody of Vilanova and charged him on a rearrest warrant with second degree failure to appear in court, driving while under suspension, driving without automotive insurance, traveling unreasonably fast, and failure to display marker plates.

The charges stem from a December 2004 incident. Newtown police released Vilanova on $1,000 bail for a February 17 court appearance.

Two Charges

On February 3, police charged Alana Shames, 22, of Southbury with driving while under suspension and with making a restricted right turn. Police released Shames on a promise to appear in court on February 17.

 

Red Traffic Signal

Motorist Andrew Heller, 18, of 6 Reservoir Road, who was driving a 1994 Saturn station wagon with three passengers, was headed southward on Main Street about 10:18 pm January 28, but did not stop for a red traffic signal and struck the left side of a 2002 Mercedes-Benz ML-320 sport-utility vehicle being driven on a green traffic signal from Sugar Street to Glover Avenue by motorist Daryl Galotta, 51, of 5 Grand Place, police report.

There were no injuries, police said. Both vehicles were heavily damaged and both vehicles were towed.

Police issued Heller an infraction ticket for failure to obey a red traffic signal.

Three Vehicles

Police report a three-vehicle accident on Church Hill Road about 2:40 pm February 1.

Eastbound motorist Edwin Bokuniewicz, 47, of 21 Adams Hill Lane, who was driving a 2004 Ford Taurus, was making a right turn into a parking lot at 22 Church Hill Road, police said.

Eastbound motorist Marina Duran, 52, of Danbury, who was driving a 2002 Nissan Altima, stopped behind the Taurus, police said.

Eastbound motorist Sheilah Krasnickas, 37, of 19 Washington Avenue, who was driving a 2000 Ford Windstar minivan, then struck the rear end of the Altima, pushing the Altima into the rear end of the Taurus, police report.

There were no injuries. Police issued Krasnickas a written warning for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Fire Truck

After a routine fire call at 27 Obtuse Road at 1:49 pm on January 30, firefighter David Jossick, 39, of 2 Fox Run Lane South, was backing a 1976 Ford fire pumper truck out of the driveway at that address, police said. The fire truck is owned by the Hawleyville Volunteer Fire Company.

Motorist Ernest Gavel, 45, of New Milford, who was driving a 1997 Saab 900 southward on Obtuse Road, stopped to allow the fire truck to back out of the driveway, police said.   

 The rear end of the fire truck then struck the front end of the Saab, police said. The Saab was towed away. There were no injuries. Police verbally warned Jossick for unsafe backing.
