Polly Brody Will Bring Birds Program To Next Garden Club Meeting

The Garden Club of Newtown will learn about bird migration in a program presented by ornithologist Polly Brody on Tuesday, March 25, at 1 pm, in the Olga Knoepke Memorial Room of Cyrenius H. Booth Library. The public is invited to attend the lecture.

A former resident of Newtown who currently lives in Southbury, Polly Brody is a graduate of Mount Holyoke College and earned a Masters Degree from Southern Connecticut State University in biology. She has traveled extensively in Europe, East Africa, Australia and South America following her passion for bird watching. As a biologist and experienced field ornithologist she lectures and has created seminars on animal behavior.

Ms Brody has long been an active advocate for the environment and when she was chairman of Newtown Conservation Commission she helped to preserve the 790 acres in Newtown that is now known as the Upper Paugussett State Forest.

Also a writer, she has won awards and has been published in many literary journals and was a presenting poet for the New England Foundation for the Humanities series, “After Frost, Poetry in New England”.  She is the author of three books: Other Nations (poetry), The Burning Bush (essays with poetry) and, most recently At the Flower’s Lip (a chapbook of poetry).  The Burning Bush and At the Flower’s Lip are still in print and will be available for sale following her presentation for the garden club.

As a part of her presentation Ms. Brody will discuss the environmental factors that influence migration, photo-period and its relationship to migration, how birds navigate and the epic migration voyage of the Golden Plover.  She will also read her poem Marathon, which relates to the Golden Plover.

There is no charge and registration is not necessary. For more information, call 270-1108.
