Lasser Wins Annual Chess Club Championship
The Newtown Chess Club annual championship tournament took place November 12 and 19, with playoffs held Saturday, December 3, at the C.H. Booth Library. Twelve players participated in the US Chess Federation-sanctioned tournament. Glenn Budzinski of Newtown, host of the Newtown Chess Club, organized and directed the event.
The winner with a 4-0 record was Alan Lasser of Sandy Hook. Second place, with a 3-1 score went to 12-year-old Joseph Han, Southbury. Joseph is one of the top 100 chess players in the US in his age group, said Mr Budzinski.
Tied at 2½-1½ for third place and senior champion were Michael Knatz of Newtown and Joe Hricko of Southington. Mr Knatz was awarded the third place trophy on tie breaks.
The Club Reserve Championship at 2-2 is Dr Steve Landin, Newtown, who edged out 8-year-old Leo Liu of Danbury in a playoff game. Leo received the club Junior Champion trophy.
The Newtown Chess Club meets Saturday afternoons, at the C.H. Booth Library, from 1 to 4:30 pm. It is open to all, regardless of skill or age. All equipment is provided and there are no dues.
