Cheshire Father’s Day Tournament: The Newtown White Lighting finished tied for third in their division with 1 win, 1 loss, and 1 tie. They end the spring season with an overall record of 7 wins, 4 losses, and 6 ties.

Newtown 2, Seymour 1 – Ryan King got the scoring started with a great header that sailed past the goalie. Kaj Djonne notched the assist with a great cross from the right side. Patrick Rowley also had a great goal off a pass from Jeremy Doski. The midfield was controlled by Constant Gregoire and Clay Gattey. Kevin Droniak and Knute Johnson were solid on defense, shutting down Seymour’s attacks. Kevin Ovendorf had nine saves.

Newtown 0, Shelton 2 – Shelton scored two early goals but after that play was dominated by the White Lighting. They had several shots on goal but just could not convert. The offense was lead by Michael Biancardi and Anthony Vournazos. Nathyn Horvath and Graham Hubbert were excellent on defense shutting down Shelton in the second half.

Newtown 1, Madison 1 – In the final game of the year, Newtown played a close match with a very good Madison team. Madison had the lead going into the half but Newtown fought back and tied the score midway through the second half. Clay Gattey scored off a pass from Michael Cook. Kevin Ovendorf made several great saves to hold the tie. Sawyer Conrad and Luca Imbimbo controlled the midfield and Dillon Wikramanayake was aggressive on defense setting up several plays.

 

Girls U14 Travel

Newtown Power 4, Stamford Hurricanes 2 - The Power finished the season strong by handing previously undefeated Stamford its only loss of the season and knocking it out of first place. Ale Fuentes, Molly Mahoney, Lexi Black, and Kendall Svanda all scored in a game in which the Power. The entire team contributed to the win.

 

Girls U11 Travel

Avon 4, Lightning 1 (State Cup Final) – The bubble burst for the U11 girls as they lost their bid for the State Cup championship on a steamy, unforgiving field in Simsbury. Facing an impressive Avon team, Newtown was unable to convert any of its shots despite overall good teamwork and solid play. Emily Riley scored the lone goal for the Lightning on a penalty kick. Kate Fallon was tough in goal throughout the match. Meg Korchman and Dale Shearin were effective on defense and Siena Cicarelli and Amy Martinelli played well in the midfield. In addition to their achievement of becoming U11 Girls State Cup finalists, the Newtown Lightning team was recognized after the game with the CJSA State Cup Good Sportsmanship Award.

Westport 3, Lightning 2 – The U11 girls ended their season with an exciting game between two evenly matched teams. Although Newtown took it to Westport from the first whistle, putting on pressure and taking early shots, the first half ended with the opponents ahead 1-0. Westport scored again shortly into the second period to take a 2-0 lead. The Newtown girls came back, however, as Jessica Keller put one in on a penalty kick and Sarah Lynch scored to tie the contest at 2-2. Westport managed to score one more time moments before the game ended, leaving Newtown with a disappointing loss. Lynch, Emily Riley, and Kailee Dunnigan were relentless on offense, withstanding some very physical play to keep up the press. Kate Fallon and Raquel Crespo played well in goal, and Keller controlled the midfield with help from Megan Meyer, Shelby Tolla, and Michelle Zarifis.

The Newtown Lightning finished the spring season with a 5-1-2 record in league play and a 4-1 record in State Cup action.

 

Girls U10 Travel

Comets 6, New Canaan 0 – For the fifth time this season, Kelsey Muniz recorded a hat trick. Tallies also came from Kimberly Brello on a penalty kick, Alyssa Ruefenacht and Sarah Lyon. Alana Murray and Katie Mossbarger provided offensive support with one assist apiece while Portia Baudisch kept the pressure on up front as well. Haley Trudell and Julia Schoeni worked hard at midfield to keep the ball from goalkeepers Emily Charash, Mossbarger, and Muniz.

 

Boys U14

Boots 3, Thunderbolts 0 – Ryan Pisani, Ryan Moyer, and Luke Piazza scored for Boots. Brandon Luxkaranayagam did a great job on defense, and Henry Summ was active on wing. Tim Kelly and Justin Adsitt-Weiner did a great job as goalies for the Thunderbolts. Josh Tuffy played excellent midfield, and Patrick Haggerty played solid defense.

Final - Strykerz 5, Vipers 4 – For the Vipers two goals by Mac Morlock, one by Josh Branchflower and one by Ryan LeMay. Luke Shearin played a great overall game on the field and in the goal and Nathan Norwich played great on defense. For the Strykerz, one goal by Charlie Poarch, one by Chad Cullens and a hat trick by Ivan Hutchison. Patrick Afriyie and Tyler Hanna were solid in the midfield and Vivek Tedla played well on defense.

 

Boys U-10

The Oskars 2, The Stags 0 – For the Oskars, Colin Villamana and Matt Hess each scored a goal, Lukas Palumbo had a strong defensive game, and William Roberts was great in goal. For The Stags, Joe Perkus and Korey Brodsky were excellent in goal, Curtis Giles was great as a midfielder, and Brandon Rodriguez played well defensively.

The Oskars 2, The Strikers 0 – For the Strikers, Richard Ciamarra played well offensively, Peter Manfredonia was great as goalie. Bobby Katrinak and Christian Morlock had a strong game defensively, and Greg Theile played very well at midfield. For the Oskars, Travis Hanna and Albert Dean each scored a goal, Grant Untiedt played a great overall game, and Mason Melillo excelled on defense.

 

Girls U13

League Games

Newtown Flash 4, Wilton 2 - Lindsay Jossick scored two goals, one off an assist by Kyra Murray and a second on a rebound off of her shot on goal. Zoe Eggleston scored off of an assist by Lydia Beiter. Stephanie Roman scored on a pk. Meaghan Harkins played aggressively. Lyndsey Pearlman made a key block on an attempt to score. Defensive players, Katie Shirley Julia Trudell, Bianca Solano, and Kelly Brooks worked forcefully at their positions. Goalkeeper, Emily Brisson made several notable saves.

Newtown Flash 2, New Canaan 2 – A complete team effort was very evident in their match-up against New Canaan, as the Newtown Flash, nearly taking first place in the SW District, played a determined game. Lindsay Jossick and Stephanie Roman scored the goals.

 

Tournament Games: The Newtown Flash took second place in the Newington Tournament winning three of their four games. Emily Brisson tended goal for the series, gaining shutouts in two of the four games.

Newtown Flash 4, Southington 0 – Lydia Beiter scored one and assisted on two goals. Lindsay Jossick scored two goals. Meaghan Harkins played a strong game with a promising header shot on goal. Forward, Kyra Murray used her speed to wear down the Southington defense. Lyndsey Pearlman brought the ball up well through midfield. Julia Trudell played well on forward with several well positioned shots on goals hitting the crossbar. Defensive players Katie Shirley and Bianca Solano along with goalkeer, Emily Brisson, worked well as a defensive barrier to keep Southington scoreless.

Newtown Flash 4, Granby 2 – Lydia Beiter scored two goals, Kyra Murray and Lindsay scored one goal each. Assists were by Meaghan Harkins and Lindsay Jossick. Abby Blakeman used some great techniques to keep Southington off-guard. Zoe Eggleston moved the ball through the midfield smoothly and kept aggressive. Molly Arneth and Jilliana Ciamarra were quick to the ball and battled well for the ball. Defense, Bianca Solano, used her speed and ability to shut down several key offensive attempts.

Madison 3, Newtown Flash 0 - The Flash played extremely hard against their toughest competition of the tournament. Katie Shirley was a defensive demon with her determination to stop the Madison offense. Emily Brisson made great saves in goal. Abby Blakeman, Zoe Eggleston, Molly Arneth, Lyndsey Pearlman, Jilliana Ciamarra, Meaghan Harkins, Lindsay Jossick, Kyra Murray, Lydia Beiter, Julia Trudell, Bianca Solano, and Kelly Brooks played with grit.

Newtown Flash 3, Simsbury 0 - Zoe Eggleston made a spectacular cross to Julia Trudell who smoothly scored. Lydia Beiter and Lindsay Jossick also scored a goal a piece. Abby Blakeman worked hard at keeping the ball out of Simsbury’s possession. Kelly Brooks was quick to the ball on defense and passed the ball to her offense well. Katie Shirley played her defensive position with command.

 

Girls U10

Rockets 1, Blazing Monkeys 1 – Kelly Coughlin led the way for the Rockets with the team’s only goal. Strong defensive performances were turned in by Emily Jerris, Makenzie Casey, Becky Frank and Grace Frost. Clair Beiter had a strong all-around game. Marissa Thill scored the goal for the Funky Monkeys with an assist from Megan Weber. Brianna MacDonald and Catherine McHugh had a great all-around game and Maren Brady and Hannah Grant were excellent in goal.

Galaxy 4, Torpedos 0 - For Galaxy, three goals were scored by Meghan Grimes and one by Chrissy Moore. Great all-around play by Sierra Mather, Lexi Rodriguez, and Jonelle Tran. Strong defense by Hannah Delia and Leah Bromberg.

 

Girls U8

Mustangs 2, Cheetahs 0 – The Mustangs finished up the season undefeated, which marks the second season in a row they haven’t lost a game. They were led by Priya Deraney and Nevan Gattey who scored the goals. Jenna Ehnot and Jacqueline Seras had assists. Olivia Caplan, Amanda Wikramanayake, and Alessandra Manfredi were great on offense. Sarah MacMullan and Lauren King were excellent on defense. Alexandra Ferris had the shutout in goal. Audrey Sedensky of the Cheetahs was great on defense. Lauren Cirone and Julia Hoskins were aggressive in the midfield.

 

Girls U6

Cheetahs 0, Little Devils 3 – In the final game of the season, Katie Sailer, Julia Sullivan and Simone Paradis each put in a goal for the Little Devils. Sarah Holcomb, Jenna Gonski, and Emma Stierle all played well for the Cheetahs.
