Route 302

Police report that they stopped motorist Albert Nalewajk, 33, of Bridgeport on Route 302 about 5:20 pm February 23, because he did not have a front marker plate on the vehicle that he was driving.

After investigating, police charged Nalewajk with failure to display a front marker plate and with driving while under suspension.

After processing, police released Nalewajk on a written promise to appear March 8 in Danbury Superior Court.

Moving Violations

Police said they saw motorist Gerald Mebane, Jr, 34, of Bridgeport drive straight through a right-turn-only lane on southbound South Main Street near Sand Hill Plaza on February 23, so they stopped him to investigate.

Police charged Mebane with failure to obey a traffic lane law and with driving while under suspension. After posting $100 bail, Mebane was released for a March 9 court appearance.

DUI Warrant

After learning that police held a warrant for his arrest, David J. Bunger, 20, of 6 Cedar Hill Road turned himself over to police at the police station on February 25, and was charged with driving under the influence and with failure to drive to the right.

Police said the charges stem from a one-car accident near 31-A Brushy Hill Road last December 31, in which the southbound Bunger, who was alone while driving a 1995 Honda sedan, lost control of the auto, crossed the road’s center line and then struck a utility pole. Following that accident, Bunger was transported to Danbury Hospital for treatment of injuries.

After processing, police released Bunger on $250 bail for a March 21 court appearance.

Berkshire Road

About 12:46 pm February 16, motorist Emily Bolmer, 19, of 38 Berkshire Road, who was driving a 1998 Dodge Dakota, was leaving her driveway and then collided with eastbound motorist Kurt Eckhardt, 49, of 73 Great Ring Road, who was driving a 2004 Honda Odyssey, police said.

There were no injuries. Police issued Bolmer a written warning for failure to grant the right of way.

Manhole Cover

While driving a 1994 Ford Escort sedan westward on Church Hill Road about 11:24 pm February 23, motorist Ben Champagne, 24, of 63 Hattertown Road struck a manhole cover, which had been dislodged from its normal location and was lying on the street, police report.

The Ford was damaged by the impact. There were no injuries. Police took no enforcement.

Restaurant Break-In

Police report that sometime between 10:40 pm on February 24, and 9:20 am on February 25, someone broke into Kolam Restaurant at 316 South Main Street and stole about $270 in cash. The break-in caused about $400 in damage to the front door of the business. Police are investigating and ask anyone with information about the crime to contact them at 426-5841.

Property Damage

Sometime between 3:30 pm February 24 and 8:25 am February 25, someone drove onto properties at 115 and 117 High Rock Road. The action damaged some hedges at 115 High Rock Road.

The incident resulted in an estimated $2,750 of damage. Police ask anyone with information on the vandalism to contact them at 426-5841.

Car Key Found

Police said they are still seeking to return to its owner a key for a Honda automobile, which was found in the parking lot near the TJ Maxx store at Sand Hill Plaza at 228 South Main Street. The key, which was found February 19, was attached to a Courtney Honda key chain.

Police are holding the key for safekeeping and ask the owner to contact them. Sergeant Darlene Froehlich is in charge of found items, telephone 426-5841.

DUI Warrant

On February 24, police arrested Ashley Yost, 23, of Ansonia on a warrant, charging her with driving under the influence and with reckless driving in connection with an October 27 motor vehicle accident.

Yost, who was alone, was driving a 1992 Honda Accord westward on Berkshire Road, near the Monroe town line on October 27, when the vehicle struck some guardrailing, crossed the road, and then struck a tree, according to police.

Following the accident, the Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported Yost to Danbury Hospital to be checked for injuries.

After processing the February 24 arrest, police released Yost on $1,500 bail for a March 7 court appearance.

I-84 DUI

State police report that at about 2:44 am February 26, they spotted motorist Pablo Rivera, 43, of Waterbury, driving erratically on eastbound Interstate 84, west of Exit 13, so they stopped him to investigate.

State police charged Rivera with driving under the influence and with failure to drive in the proper lane. Rivera was released on $500 bail for a March 20 court appearance.

Reckless Endangerment

State police report that motorist Brian J. Guidi, 24, of Oxford pursued an unidentified female motorist on westbound Interstate 84 on the afternoon of February 26, entering the highway at Exit 14 and stopping the female east of Exit 11.

Guidi caused the woman to stop on the road shoulder, where he became involved in disruptive behavior, state police said. The woman was not injured.

State police responded to the scene and charged Guidi with second-degree reckless endangerment and with second-degree breach of peace.

State police held Guidi on $5,000 bail for a February 27 court appearance.

Highway Arrest

About 5 pm February 26, state police stopped motorist Michael Ruhs, 43, of Bridgeport near Exit 11 of eastbound Interstate 84 to investigate. State police charged Ruhs with driving while under suspension, driving an unregistered vehicle, and driving without automotive insurance. Ruhs was scheduled to appear in court to answer the charges.

Interstate DUI

State police said motorist David S. Mullen, 44, of New Fairfield was seen traveling on the right road shoulder in order to pass another vehicle on westbound Interstate 84, west of Exit 9, about 3:30 pm February 23.

After investigating, state police charged Mullen with driving under the influence, passing on the road shoulder, and driving an unregistered vehicle. Mullen was scheduled to appear in Danbury Superior Court for arraignment on the charges.

Four Vehicles

State police report an accident involving four vehicles on westbound Interstate 84, west of Exit 9, about 10 am February 20.

Trucker Eduardo Miranda Deus, 36, of Asheboro, N.C., who was driving a 2002 International truck, stopped suddenly and swerved to the right road shoulder, initiating a chain-reaction accident that involved motorist Andrew Davies, 48, of 96 Castle Hill Road, who was driving a 2003 Chevrolet Impala; motorist Elisabeth Ryan Addyman, 22, of 48 Queen Street, who was driving a 2002 Ford Focus; and motorist Michael Gallant, 52, of Glenburn, Maine, who was driving a 2004 Chevrolet Express van, state police said.

There were no injuries. State police said Deus made a restricted turn. 

Burglary/Larceny

Police report a break-in at Lamp Crafters, a retail store at 124 South Main Street.

Sometime between 5 pm February 25 and 11 am February 27, someone forcibly entered the business and stole various unspecified items, police said.

The crime amounts to third degree burglary, which is a felony, and sixth degree larceny, which is a misdemeanor involving the theft of less than $250 in value.

Police are investigating and ask anyone with information about the crime to contact them at 270-8888.

U-Turn Crash

About 1:25 pm February 26, motorist Carla Masopust, 23, of Wappingers Falls, N.Y., was driving a 2005 Jeep Liberty southward on Main Street, as motorist Philip Archard, 61, of 30 Zoar Road was parked in a 2004 Audi A-4 along the southbound road shoulder, police said.

The Audi then attempted to make a U-turn, but collided with the Jeep, police said. There were no injuries. Police issued Archard a written warning for making a restricted turn.

Dodge Vs VW

A two-vehicle accident occurred on Walker Hill Road, near Great Ring Road, about 5:21 pm February 23, police report.

Motorist Curtis Brackett, 40, of 15 Walker Hill Road was driving a 1999 Dodge Ram pickup truck westward, as motorist Peter MacKay, 20, of 12 Walker Hill Road was driving a 1998 Volkswagen Jetta sedan eastward, police said.

The Dodge drifted into the opposite lane and collided with the Volkswagen, police said. There were no injuries. Police issued Brackett a written warning.

SUV Vs Deer

While traveling southward near 51 Toddy Hill Road about 6:42 am February 28, motorist Charles Huegi, 39, of Trumbull, who was driving a 2003 Ford Explorer, encountered a deer that had entered the road, police report.

Huegi attempted to stop, but could not, and the Ford collided with the deer, police said. Huegi was not injured. Police took no enforcement.

DUI Arrest

Police said they saw motorist Richard J. Behnan, 42, of Naugatuck driving a 1992 Jeep Cherokee eastward on Wasserman Way that was crossing over into the westbound lane at about 11:30 pm March 1, so they stopped him to investigate.

After performing field sobriety testing, police charged Behnan with driving under the influence and with failure to drive to the right. After processing, police released Behnan on $50 bail for a March 16 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.
