Jessica Carino, daughter of Lynne and Dave Carino of Sandy Hook, was named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at The Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland in College Park, Maryland. Miss Carino graduated from Newtown High School in 1999 and will be a junior this fall majoring in accounting.

Sandy Hook native Michael A. Brennan graduated from Dartmouth College receiving a bachelor of arts degree. He is the son of Harold and Anne Brennan and a graduate of Fairfield College Preparatory School. Mr Brennan majored in engineering sciences.

Rebecca Samberg of Sandy Hook is a professor of developmental studies at Housatonic Community College. She received the Excellence Award offered by the National Institute for Staff and Development at the college’s convocation August 27.

Matthew James Klaus, son of Ellen and Bernhard Klaus of Newtown, was named the year 2001 recipient of the Saint Michael’s College Scholarship and Service Book Award. The award recognizes students who demonstrate a commitment to volunteerism and leadership through community service. He is a student at Immaculate High School.

Newtown High School teacher Denise Mendoza was among seven Connecticut high school teachers and administrators who received training to teach Advanced Placement (AP) chemistry at a week-long workshop at Southern Connecticut State University.

Three graduates of the class of 2001 at Newtown High School received scholarship money from Big Y. Peter Yemc received a Gerald & Paul D’Amour Founder’s Scholarship for Academic Excellence, while Jeffrey Corbeil and Ryan Ignatius received Big Y Fellowship scholarships. Big Y provided 244 scholarships totaling $175,000 this year.

Jared Tendler recently graduated from Skidmore College with a double major in business and psychology. He was awarded Scholar All-American Honors and was a three-time All-American in golf. Mr Tendler will be pursuing a master’s degree in counseling psychology at Northeastern University.
