Joan G. Maher, 71, wife of Joseph M. Maher, died at her home after a lengthy illness, August 11, surrounded by her family.
Mrs Maher was born in Danbury on March 14, 1936. She was the daughter of T. Raymond and Marion (Griffin) Green. She attended St Peterâs School and was a graduate of Danbury High School, Class of 1953. She attended Annhurst College, and, upon graduation, began a teaching career at Bethel High School.
It was at this time she met Joe, and after a short courtship, they married, on December 26, 1959. They moved to Newtown in 1960 and began a family. She returned to teaching in 1975, where she taught business subjects at Henry Abbott Technical School. She retired in 1992.
Mrs Maher was a member of St Rose of Lima Church and was active in Newtown Ambulance Association and Newtown Visiting Nurse Association. She was an avid reader, an accomplished knitter, and a New York Yankees fan. She will forever be remembered for her courage, her strength, and her faith. She will be sorely missed by her friends and family.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Joseph âJayâ M. Maher III and his wife, Maureen; James âJamieâ R. Maher and his wife, Jane; a daughter and son-in-law, Jill M. and Robert LeBlanc, all of Newtown; nine grandchildren, Jake and James Maher and Michael, Sean, and Emily Maher, and Kevin, Brian, Timmy, and Megan LeBlanc; her brother and sister-in-law, Thomas R. and Mary Green of Danbury; and three nieces.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St Peterâs Church, Danbury, on August 14. Burial followed in St Peterâs Cemetery.
