About 25 local volunteer firefighters attacked multiple brush fires along High Rock Road amid high winds on the afternoon of Wednesday, March 26.

Fires occurred along an approximately 9,000-foot section of the road lying between its intersection with Grays Plain Road on the north and the Monroe border on the south.

There were no injuries. No houses, garages, or vehicles were damaged by the blazes, officials said.

Fire Marshal Bill Halstead, who also is the Sandy Hook Fire Chief, said the fires may have been sparked after a tree fell midafternoon and brought down some suspended primary-grade electrical lines at the intersection of High Rock Road and Grays Plain Road.

A consequent surge of electricity traveling through the power lies strung alongside High Rock Road may have caused sparking in those lines and the ensuing brush fires, he said.

Chief Halstead said March 27 that no evidence has been found that the fires were intentionally set.

The first call reporting a fire was received at 3:24 pm from 49 High Rock Road. The last fire to be reported came in at 5:11 pm from the area near the intersection of High Rock Road and Great Ring Road.

Sandy Hook and Botsford firefighters joined forces to battle the fires, which were located in the Botsford fire district.

Chief Halstead said that firefighters needed to cut up the tree that fell at the intersection of High Rock Road and Grays Plain Road to get to the fires.

Eight fire vehicles responded to the incidents.

Botsford Fire Chief Wayne Ciaccia said of the difficult weather, “It was windy. [The fire] was moving.”

Water carried on fire vehicles was used to put out the blazes, he said.

Firefighters made a point of thoroughly wetting down the areas that had burned to prevent the blazes from reigniting, Chief Ciaccia said.
