Timothy J. Holian

(D)

Personal Information: Timothy J. Holian, 49; Attorney; six-year member of the Legislative Council, current vice chairman; BS biology and BS economics from St Lawrence University; JD, John Marshall Law School, Chicago; local practitioner for 20 years; lifelong Newtown resident

What personal qualities do you have that you believe will benefit the Legislative Council and the community it serves? Newtown has been my home for 49 years. I have always had, and will continue to have, an unwavering concern for the welfare of the community and its citizens. That concern, coupled with six years of experience on the Legislative Council, should allow me to continue to serve the town well.

What do you believe is the council’s biggest challenge over the next two years? To implement a recent proposal and recommendation by the Board of Finance, endorsed by the Legislative Council, that the town use bond issues, together with matching funds or grants, if available, to purchase as much improvable land as possible. The loss of said land from the grand list and the cost of borrowing the funds necessary to purchase the land will be more than offset by the savings generated by not having to provide education and municipal services to those who would otherwise occupy the land if it was developed for single-family residences.

What can the Legislative Council do to limit the growth of Newtown’s tax rate? See above.
