A visiting delegation from China was greeted at a morning pep rally at Newtown High School on Monday, January 27.

The delegation’s visit is overseen by the Newtown International Center for Education (NICE).

The delegation, which includes students and educators from Liaocheng, China, lined up across the floor of the high school’s gymnasium for the assembly.

“Let’s welcome our delegation,” NHS Principal Charles Dumais said at the start of the brief assembly, which was held prior to the start of classes on Monday.

After Mr Dumais spoke and shared information about the delegates and Newtown’s relationship with Liaocheng, one of the delegates translated his words for the visitors.

“This relationship has become a fundamental part of what we are at Newtown High School,” Mr Dumais said, “and we are very glad to have you here today.”

The delegation arrived on Friday, January 24, and members of it are staying with host families until February 2. Throughout the delegation’s time in Newtown, multiple events are planned, including welcoming ceremonies at other schools and visits to area attractions, including Yale University in New Haven and New York City. The delegation was officially welcomed on Friday, January 24, during a ceremony at NHS, and a farewell ceremony is set for February 1 at Reed Intermediate School.

The delegation’s visit will be covered in a future edition of The Newtown Bee.
