Doski Caps Off High School Career In Style

Sure, thereâs no girlsâ golf team at Newtown High School, but Abbey Doski certainly has put the Nighthawks on the girlsâ golf map in Connecticut. Doski, who will graduate this month, won her fourth straight South-West Conference championship this spring, and concluded her high school career by tying for seventh in the girlsâ state championship, also in Orange, on June 5.
Doski competed as a member of the boysâ team throughout her career, routinely figuring into the top scorers in match play. Because of the individual nature of the game, she broke away from the boys and competed in the SWC girlsâ tournament each spring, and has kept a stranglehold on the title.
Doski shot a 78 to win the conference title at Orange Hills Country Club on May 29. âIt was definitely a big goal of mine to pull through for the fourth year in a row,â Doski said. âI definitely scored well. I didnât think it was the best Iâve ever played.â
That said, it was a pretty convincing win for Doski, who ran away with an 11-stroke triumph over second-place finisher Sabrina Thomas of Joel Barlow of Redding.
The Newtown High senior says she will miss playing as part of the NHS team, which practices and competes at Rock Ridge Country Club. âItâs definitely going to be hard to stop playing but I think it was a great way to end it,â Doski said of the SWC title.
âAbbeyâs winning the SWC girlsâ golf tournament for four consecutive years is one of the most incredible athletic achievements in school history,â Newtown High Athletic Director Gregg Simon said. âShe has always been the consummate student-athlete excelling both in the classroom and at each sport she has played.â
Doski also played volleyball and basketball during her Newtown High career, helping both teams to championships.
The golf standout said the toughest part about competing during her high school career was getting going to a competitive level after long winters away from regular exposure to the game. Doski will go to William & Mary in Williamsburg, Va., next school year but, as of now, only plans to play golf for fun in her free time.
