An Evening Of Jean Mann And Her Porcelain Art

WOODBURY — Flanders nature Center & Land Trust will host an evening of art on Friday, April 15, at 7:30 pm, at the Van Vleck Studio Welcome Center, at the corner of Church Hill and Flanders Roads.

The program, called “Porcelain’s Surprises,” will feature Jeann Mann of New Fairfield, who will share her lifetime love of claw work, especially porcelain.

Beginning as a musician and then a sculpture, the artist has become one of the world’s most expert porcelain carvers. A porcelain box carved by her is in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and her work is in 12 other museums as well.

Ms Mann studied at the Arts Students League, privately with the sculptor Irma Rothstein in New York City, kiln-building with Gerry Williams (both in her studio and at Brookfield Craft Center), as well as sculpture and pottery with Donald Mavros.

Ms Mann is an artist grantee of Connecticut Commission on the Arts, and was named a master craftsman/educator by the Society of Connecticut Craftsmen. Her work has been included in many publications, and her students are numerous since she has taught pottery and sculpture for many decades in her studio in New Fairfield and in other locations.

Ms Mann will be showing slides and some of her works of art, including some pieces that move.

The event continues Flanders’ tradition of presenting art and nature programs to perpetuate the ideals of founder Natalie Van Vleck, who was a farmer, environmentalist and pioneer modernist painter.

A contribution of $5 is requested. Additional information is available by calling 203-263-3711.
