Flag Day is Saturday, June 14. It commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States, in 1777, by resolution of the Second Continental Congress. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation that officially established June 14 as Flag Day.

Traditionally, old, worn out flags that are no longer serviceable are retired on Flag Day. Newtown VFW Post 308 is accepting flags for retirement. Flags may be dropped off at any hour  in the red, white blue mailbox located at the bottom of the steps in front of the VFW, Freedom Defenders Way (formerly 18 Tinkerfield Road). 

Additional drop-off locations have been set up at Edmond Town Hall, 45 Main Street; and Newtown Municipal Center, 3 Primrose Street. Flags should be dropped at these locations by June 10; any donations after that date should be done only at the VFW.

On June 14, at noon, the VFW and Newtown Scouts will retire American flags with honor and solemnity according to national guidelines. Those who would like to participate in the service are invited to contact the VFW at .vfwpost308newtown@gmail.com
