Smart Guns, Dumb Guns By Brendan Duffy
To The Editor:The Newtown Bee recently stated in an editorial that every year, 30,000 deaths are caused by guns in the US… suicides, homicides, accidents combined. The Bee reported that 769 deaths of people under the age of 18 occur annually due to gun accidents and suicides. The Bee appear to want to reduce this number and believe smart guns will help. This is new technology that will prevent guns from operating (sending a bullet down the barrel) when handled by anyone other than the individual whose biometric identity has been programmed into the gun.The Bee's premise. By failing to establish why/how this technology will reduce gun deaths, they undermine their poorly presented case. The Bee and other supporters of this technology won't point this out, but that's where this is headed… proponents will of course lie about it, similar to "If you like your plan, you can keep your plan"), ironically this will likely drive gun sales up. Mom, Dad, Jr, and Sis each need their own gun now and can't defend themselves with a family 12 gauge. The Bee's bonnet. The Bee could spend a little news ink on that bloodbath.

If the gun reads and approves your fingerprint/palm print/retina scan/DNA/whatever… fire away. No match? The gun's as lethal as a brick, but a lot more expensive.
There's a fundamental problem with
Will anyone under or over the age of 18 have their own biometrically compatible gun, with which they can deliberately or accidentally take their own life? Certainly.
As the liberty haters will eventually mandate the use of this technology, requiring all guns sold in America to have it (
Gun haters routinely argue that more guns lead to more gun deaths… ipso facto, another bee in
Maybe some statistics should be presented indicating how many lives are saved each year by dumb guns. There are claimed to be 300,000,000 dumb guns in the US.
If successful defensive action (prevention of a violent crime) were taken with .01% of these guns annually (one one-hundredth of one percent, or 1 gun in 10,000), a noteworthy balance against the reported gun deaths begins to emerge. To believe that gun deaths in this country do not exceed, or even pale in comparison to the number of deaths prevented via the defensive use of firearms… this is an easy belief… at least as easy as believing that 2nd amendment haters won't try anything to rid us all of firearms.
Consider the 30,000 gun deaths of 2015 evenly distributed across every one of the 365 days last year, about 82 people per day, January 1 through December 31, 82 people each and every day. By comparison, our government sanctioned Baby Murdering Industry deliberately murdered that many human embryos, 30,000, by January 11th, leaving the remaining 354 days to rack up the body count. Perhaps next time they're feeling self-righteous, the editors of
