Snapshot: Barbara Wilson
Occupation: I have recently taken a new job, as a relocation accounting analyst with Cartus, in Danbury. I process payments for transferees in international moves. Before this, I was in banking, working for a credit union. I’m enjoying learning something new.
Family: My husband Scot and I have been married for 24 years. We have two sons, and a daughter. Niles is a student at Housatonic Community College; Ian is a junior at Newtown High School; and Hailey is going into eighth grade at Newtown Middle School.
Pets: We had the best cats in the world, Spike and Tread, but both passed away, from old age. Right now, we just have a Beta fish.
How long have you lived in Newtown? We have been here for 22 years.
What do you like to do in your free time? I have been active with the Newtown Historical Society for seven years. I’ve been the events coordinator for most of that time, but it’s time now for me to step down and have someone new do that. I’m still involved with the group, though. That did take up a lot of my time. I love to read, and I like to cook. I like to learn new international recipes. As a family we do an International Day every couple of months. We pick a country and cook foods from there, listen to music, watch a movie, and we each share a topic related to that country.
Do you have a favorite book? I always like best whatever I’m currently reading. My favorite genre is historical fiction, or something international. I like Khaled Hosseini’s books. And The Mountains Echoed was one of my favorites.
Do you have a favorite travel destination? I love to travel, but we haven’t had a chance to do much. Some of my favorite places are the virtual places we have gone during our International Days. I think I liked Kenya, in part because I was surprised how good the food was; Libya culturally was interesting to learn about; and Peru introduced us to quinoa, before it became popular. Chad was voted worst food. Everything is made with peanut butter including their morning cereal, which is essentially oatmeal with peanut butter.
What is the best thing about Newtown? I like Newtown for a couple of reasons. It’s similar to Ridgefield, when I grew up. The size of the towns is very similar. The people here are great, and Newtown is central to so much, which I like. It’s not far from Hartford, or Boston, or New York City.
If you could meet someone from history, whom would you choose? I would love to meet Mary Hawley. I think she would have been an interesting person. I wish she could have used her potential earlier in life. And I would add Arthur Nettleton. He was such an influence behind Mary Hawley and a great man in his own right. I would love to meet both of them together, and witness their friendship.
Did you have a favorite toy growing up? I have say my bicycle. Two of my friends and I used to ride our bikes everywhere in the summer. That’s how we got around. We were definitely outside kids.
Do you have a guilty pleasure? Going out to a movie. You’re just there, doing nothing else.
