While the formal dedication of FunSpace II, the new playground at Dickinson Park, was held over the weekend, Newtown Parks & Recreation is reminding residents that the playground is still closed.

“We need this week to finish the safety surfacing and borders,” the department announced via email Tuesday morning. The chance that the playground would be dedicated, but remain closed, on Saturday was a caveat the department had issued when it announced the date of its dedication earlier this month.

“We anticipate — with Mother Nature’s cooperation — the playground being opened next week. Please wait for the announcement and signs to let you know when Fun Space II is officially opened,” the announcement included. “It was so very exciting seeing many of you at the Newtown Parks and Recreation Fun Space II Playground Celebration on Saturday. Thank you for sharing this exciting time with us, we were so happy to be able to see the joy and excitement of the children and families exploring this wonderful new facility.”

A full story with coverage of Saturday’s dedication event will be offered in this week’s Newtown Bee print edition and website later this week.

Meanwhile, Parks & Rec reminds everyone that Dickinson Park itself is still open for use.

“Today at 12:30 is another Claris Construction Summer Jam Concert at the Dickinson Memorial Park Bandshell with Alastair Moock,” the note continued. “It is a beautiful day to have a picnic lunch and enjoy the show.”

Admission to the concerts is free. Guests should bring in their own seating.

Under adult supervision, children were allowed to explore FunSpace II for a few hours on July 26. The new playground at Dickinson Park was dedicated on Saturday, but is now temporarily closed while town crews finish final safety installations. Parks & Rec is hoping to fully open the playground next week.
