Lauren Elizabeth Dwyer, formerly of Newtown, graduated Eastern Carolina University May 10 with a BS as a Child Life Specialist. Lauren will be doing an internship at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. She is the daughter of Nea and Michael of Alpharetta, Ga.

Jennifer Haghpanah

 

Quinnipiac University freshman Jennifer Haghpanah, daughter of Hassan and Susan Haghpanah of Newtown, has received the 2003 CRC (Chemical Rubber Co.) Press Freshman Chemistry Achievement Award for outstanding academic work during her first year at Quinnipiac. The chemistry and physical science department presented the award, which includes a certificate and the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics. She is a chemistry major.

St Margaret’s McTernan students were recognized and honored for their scholarship on the National Latin Exam. Nationally, more than 127,000 students took the 40-question exams. The following Newtown students were honored: eighth graders Brett Cloak-Gentile, son of Dr Reid Gentile and Karen Cloak of Newtown — Latin I, awarded Magna Cum Laude; twelfth grader Catherine Maher, daughter of Peter Maher and Caren Nelson of Newtown —Latin III, awarded Cum Laude; and seventh grader Ian White, son of Brian and Susan White of Newtown —Intro Latin, awarded Certificate of Achievement.

The following local students were named to the honor roll at Canterbury School for the fourth marking period: senior Adam Hopkins, son of Trevor and Irene Hopkins of Newtown; sophomore Scott Grant, son of Stephen and Susan Grant of Newtown; junior Tim Murtha, son of Tom and Mary Ann Murtha of Newtown; and freshman Sarah Wilson, daughter of Greg and Carole Wilson of Newtown.

Sandy Hook Elementary students Megan Preis and Rachel DiVanno were statewide winners in the recent Connecticut Reflections Contest. Megan placed third in Intermediate Literature and Rachel placed third in Primary Visual Arts. The Reflections Contest is conducted on an annual basis, and challenges participants to compose individual works that reflect a designated theme.

Philip Sandifer, a graduate of Newtown High School, received a bachelor of arts degree, cum laude, from The College of Wooster during commencement exercises on May 12. He was an English major.

Emily Elizabeth Wefer

 

Emily Elizabeth Wefer, daughter of John and Elizabeth Wefer of Newtown, graduated May 18 from Fairfield University with a master of arts in school psychology. She is a 1993 graduate of Newtown High School and received a bachelor of arts from St Michael’s College in 1997. Ms Wefer is currently enrolled in the certificate of advanced study at Fairfield University and is completing her mental health Internship at Four Winds Hospital in Katonah, N.Y.

In the fall, Ms Wefer will be a school psychologist intern at Fairfield High School expecting to complete the program in June 2004. She is also employed at Greenwich Autism Program (GAP) in Greenwich, where she works in the birth to 3 program.
