Water Contamination Under Control at Sandy Hook School
Water Contamination Under Control at Sandy Hook School

It appears that the district has a handle on the water contamination that affected Sandy Hook School last year, which required the district to distribute bottled water to students.
The problem was the presence of coliform in the water supply from which the school draws to get its capacity. The bacteria first showed up in the schoolâs water supply last September. Although the problem was initially addressed and cleared up, state health regulations required months of continued testing to keep bacteria at bay.
The contamination surfaced again last December, and School Buildings and Grounds Supervisor Dominick Posca quickly chlorinated the two tainted wells.
The district subsequently replaced the well caps with new enclosed caps with vent caps on top, a design that has been approved by state health officials.
Although the new caps helped prevent further occurrences of contamination, district officials said it was unclear where the bacteria initially came from.
Mr Posca said recently, âTests of the water supply in Sandy Hook are coming out good,â and with another test scheduled in the middle of the month things look to be under control for the start of school, he added.
