GREENWICH ANTIQUES SOCIETY LECTURE, JAN. 7 AT BRUCE MUSEUM

ak/gs set 12/12#722209

GREENWICH, CONN. — The Greenwich Antiques Society is sponsoring a January 7 lecture, “Great Houses of New York, 1890–1930” by Michael C. Kathrens, at the Bruce Museum at 1:15 pm.

Beginning in the 1880s and through the 1930s, many wealthy American business leaders chose to reside in New York City. Having toured Europe and seen the architecture and social rituals within the cities, many — such as the Vanderbilts, Astors, Pulitzers Carnegies — chose to emulate that style of living. They commissioned the finest architects, art and antiques dealers, and decorators to create their “Great Houses” — many of which still exist today.

Kathrens is an independent scholar specializing in American residential architecture and interior decoration of the late Nineteenth and early Twentieth Centuries.

In 2002, Acanthus Press released American Splendor: The Residential Architecture of Horace Trumbauer, the first extensive work devoted to this remarkable American architect. In 2005, Acanthus published The Great Houses of New York: 1880–1930, Kathrens’ work exploring and documenting the important urban houses in the city.

The Bruce Museum is at One Museum Drive. Tickets are $15 for nonmembers. For information or tickets, 203-869-9531 or 914-631-9439.
