The New York Jets announced that Steve George, coach of the Newtown High School football team, has been named last week’s recipient of the New York Jets High School Coach of the Week Award presented by Chase.

Through Chase’s partnership, the monetary award to benefit the school’s football program has doubled to $2,000. George will be presented with a certificate and award ball. In addition, he is invited to watch the Jets-Patriots game in Chase’s suite at MetLife Stadium on December 21.

The award, in its 19th year, is given to coaches in the Tri-state area who serve the best interests of the game through the teaching of sound football fundamentals, the motivation of young players to achieve, and the promotion of youth football by way of dedication to their communities, their schools, and their student-athletes.

George is in his eighth season as the head coach of the Nighthawks and 15th on the coaching staff. He led his teams to back-to-back South-West Conference titles in 2012 and 2013 along with conference championships in 2008 and 2011. The Newtown alumnus was a guard and defensive end on state championship teams in 1990 and ’92.

Newtown’s coach attended Western Connecticut State University in Danbury and graduated with a degree in history.

He spent six years in the United States Marine Corps Reserve and went on to earn his master’s degree in technology education from Central Connecticut State University. In addition to coaching the football team, George is in his eighth year of teaching technology education at Newtown High.

The Nighthawks visit Weston this Friday, October 31, at 7 pm.
