UPDATE (Sunday, April 29, 2018): The Associated Press is reporting the man accused of killing a sheriff's deputy was arrested Saturday outside a remote cabin, ending an intense manhunt in its fourth day in the woods of central Maine.

A law enforcement team used the slain deputy's handcuffs to arrest 29-year-old John Williams in a symbolic gesture, Sheriff Dale Lancaster said.

Williams was wanted in the fatal shooting of Cpl Eugene Cole early Wednesday after the two had an encounter on a darkened road in Norridgewock, Maine.

Cole, 62, had been involved in the arrest of Williams' girlfriend several days earlier, and Williams was worried about being arrested himself for failing to appear in court in Massachusetts on firearm charges the day of the shooting.

On Saturday, about 150 officers were searching in a wooded area where police believe Williams was cornered when a team including FBI, game wardens and local police located him outside the cabin.

Shirtless and shoeless when captured in Norridgewock, Williams appeared to be exhausted when he was led out of the woods Saturday. Officers put him into the back seat of an unmarked state police vehicle, and detectives whisked him away."

NORRIDGEWOCK, MAINE (AP) - A Maine man reportedly killed a sheriff's deputy, stole his cruiser, and robbed a convenience store early Wednesday, triggering an intensive manhunt in a rural town in central Maine.

A nationwide alert has since been issued for the man, who police identified as 29-year-old John Williams, of Madison, Me. They say he is 5'6", 120 pounds with blue eyes and brown hair. An earlier report from authorities said Williams had his hair in a ponytail, but that has been recanted.

Aircraft and armored vehicles were seen around Norridgewock and schools were locked down as officers from federal, state and local law enforcement agencies searched for Williams, who remained on the loose after abandoning the stolen cruiser, state police told reporters Wednesday.

Somerset County Cpl Sheriff Eugene Cole was killed at about 1:45 am April 25 on US Route 2 in Norridgewock about 60 miles west of Bangor, state police said. His cruiser was driven to a Cumberland Farms store, which was robbed.

Several Somerset County officers arrived on scene within 10 minutes. The car was found abandoned shortly after 5 am in another part of the town. It wasn't known if the man was driving another vehicle.

Police said Cole had been a deputy for 13 years and has a son.

Williams has a criminal record. His most recent arrest happened last month by Massachusetts State Police in Haverhill, Mass., where he was charged with carrying a firearm without a license, possession of a large-capacity firearm and other offenses, said Carrie Kimball-Monahan, spokeswoman for the Essex District Attorney's Office. Williams posted $5,000 bail and was supposed to return to court Wednesday for a hearing, she said.

Maine State Police Lt Col John Cote said Williams should not be approached if seen by the public.

"Many times we're able to say that there is not an ongoing threat, but that's not the case today," Lt Col Cote said during a press conference. "There certainly is an ongoing public threat. He's considered armed and dangerous."
