Joseph Stockmal, 81, of Shelton, died April 13 in Connecticut Hospice, Branford. He was the devoted husband of the late Cecelia (Leszczak) Stockmal.
He was born in Derby on November 12, 1921, son of the late Charles and Julia (Dobek) Stochmal and was a resident of Shelton since 1956.
He was the beloved father of Viktoria Stockmal and her husband, John Peeling, of Newtown and Julia S. Kovac and her husband, Ian, of Oxford; and proud grandfather of Ian Kovac. He is also survived by three bothers, Charles Stockmal of Seymour, Stanley Stockmal of Derby, and Frank Stockmal of Derby; six sisters, Stephanie Pczonka of Derby, Elizabeth Gucwa of Shelton, Helen Hancharyk of Oxford, Genevieve Vincent of Shelton, Theresa McNamara of Seymour, and Carol Ann Arbona of Palm Coast, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three brothers, Peter Stockmal, Casimir Stochmal, and Benjamin Stochmal; and four sisters, Mary Stochmal, Ann Stochmal, Sophie Hoynack, and Josephine Bush.
Mr Stockmal was a carpenter for more than 25 years with the former Emhart Company in Shelton before his retirement in 1982. He was an Army veteran, serving during World War II, and was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star for his service to the country.
His funeral was held April 16 from the Edward F. Adzima Funeral Home, 253 Elizabeth Street, Derby, to a Mass of Christian Burial in St Michael Church, Derby. Interment followed in St Michael Cemetery.
