NHS Teacher Tallcouch To Take Over As Basketball Coach At High School
By Andy Hutchison
Tim Tallcouch has taught at Newtown High School for the past decade, and now he will be coaching there, too. The chemistry teacher will look for some chemistry on the basketball court when he takes over with the boysâ team this fall.
Tallcouch was recently named to succeed 14-year Coach John Quinn, whose contract was not renewed by the Newtown Board of Education.
A head coach at Wilton High School for the past five years, Tallcouch welcomes the opportunity to establish another tie to the Newtown High community.
âI wish we could start tomorrow,â he said in a phone interview this past week. âNewtown has a real solid tradition and Iâm looking forward to rolling up my sleeves and starting the process.â
The new coach wonât have to wait long. Practice starts in late November, and he is offering fall conditioning opportunities for prospective team members who are not a part of a fall team. Tallcouch is encouraged by the early interest on the part of NHS students, explaining that 60-plus potential players attended a September meeting for those interested in being a part of the program.
Tallcouch lives in Seymour. He is married with three children. The 49-year-old has been teaching since his first classroom gig in Bridgeport in 1986. Tallcouch began coaching at Westhill High in Stamford in 1992, where he worked as a junior varsity and later varsity leader, and has also coached at OâBrien Tech in Ansonia.
âThe Newtown High School Athletic Department was very fortunate to find a coach with such a tremendous basketball background which includes many years coaching at the varsity level. I am positive that Tim will do an outstanding job coaching our boysâ varsity basketball team,â Newtown Coach Gregg Simon said.
