Reed Intermediate School sixth grade students who were named as the top students in the National Geographic Bee challenge for their clusters competed against each other in the school’s final competition on Thursday, January 15.

After 11 rounds and a final championship round, Anika Ledina was named as the school’s champion.

Students who participated in the geography bee final competition round at Reed with Anika were Zack Majeski, Lenie Urbina, Patrick Boyle, Katie Ballard, Jackson Morris, Christopher MacNamara, and T.J. O’Connell.

Reed Principal Anne Uberti acted as moderator for the event. She oversaw reading the questions provided by National Geographic and explained directions on how to answer each question.

Reed teacher Maura Drabik introduced the event to the assembly of students, explaining that while sixth grade students participate in the bee, fifth grade students can look forward to participating in it next school year.

According to the National Geographic Society, the state winner will receive $100, the “Complete National Geographic on DVD,” and a trip to Washington, DC, to represent Connecticut in the National Geography Bee finals, which will be held at the National Geographic Society headquarters.

The national winner, according to the society, will receive a $50,000 college scholarship, a lifetime membership in the society, and an all-expense-paid trip to the Galapagos Islands.

Each school champion participates in a test before possibly competing in the state level of the competition.

Samples, provided by National Geographic, of the questions students are asked to answer in the bee include, “A trumpet appears on the quarter of which state, known for its jazz music heritage?” and “To walk in Lisbon’s Alfama district and to stay at a beach resort in the Algarve, you would travel to what country?”

After the first 11 rounds, Anika faced off against Jackson Morris in the final championship round. Anika earned a medal for her accomplishment.
