Horan Wins Backstroke Race, Wrestlers Advance To Quarters, And Girls' Cagers Fall

Newtown High School’s Tommy Horan won the 100 yard backstroke race at the South-West Conference championship swim meet, at Masuk High on March 6. Horan made his final touch in a time of 54.74, cutting nearly three seconds from his season’s best time of 57.83. The Nighthawks scored 331.50 points to place fourth as a team behind first-place Pomperaug of Southbury (663), Brookfield (522.50), and Weston (390).

On the wrestling mats, the Nighthawks are battling in the New England championships in North Andover, Mass. Three Hawks advanced to the Saturday, March 7 quarterfinals with a successful first day of the tourney: Luca Crudo in the 113 pound weight division, Joe Accousti at 152, and Anthony Falbo at 170.

Also on March 6, in girls’ basketball action, the No. 14 Nighthawks fell 65-28 at third-seeded Mercy of Middletown in second round Class LL state tournament action. Newtown fell behind 20-1 in the opening quarter before pretty much trading baskets with the Tigers for the better part of the second and third periods, but never got the deficit any smaller than 14. Kelly Merrick scored nine points and blocked two shots; Sarah Lynch had five points and four assists; Olyvia Shaw contributed four points and pulled down ll rebounds; and Mali Klorczyk, Haley Ryan, and Lauren Wilcox all added three points for Newtown.
