The 3rd Annual Sandy Hook 5K will take place at Fairfield Hills on Saturday, March 28, with Kids Runs beginning at 8:15 am and the 5K at 9 am. The race, despite an increase in runners from 1,200 to 1,500, sold out the day registration began, back in January. But there are still ways for those interested to become involved this year and in the future through donations, sponsorships, and volunteering opportunities, as well as via a virtual run option.

All proceeds from the Sandy Hook 5K will be donated to the Newtown Memorial Fund. Last year the donations from the registration site were $13,259. Donations may be made at http://bit.ly/1CKu2fP.

Checks may be made out to the Newtown Memorial Fund and sent to Newtown Memorial Fund, Inc,  PO Box 596, Botsford CT 06404. Donors are asked to add “Sandy Hook 5K” in the memo line.

As of 9 am March 24, $5,483 had been raised through 182 donations.

Race officials indicate they are set for volunteers for this year’s run, but to learn about opportunities to volunteer at the 5K next year, e-mail volunteersh5k@gmail.com. Those interested in becoming a sponsor should send an e-mail to sponsorsh5k@gmail.com.

After a lottery system was previously used, runners this year were registered on a first come/first served basis. As was the case last year, individuals may still sign up to participate as a virtual runner at http://bit.ly/1G5Og4D.
