Students in the Summer Culinary Arts camp through Newtown Parks & Recreation spent the week of July 31 to August 4 learning how to make a long list of recipes under the guidance of instructor Sharon Martovich.

Ms Martovich teaches culinary classes in the area throughout the year, but the Summer Culinary Arts camp was the last one for the summer through Newtown Parks & Recreation. Ms Martovich also said her courses are offered through her company, Eat Play Live.

As Ms Martovich baked some student-made creations, her campers were chopping and dicing in a room at Reed Intermediate School on August 3.

Each day of the camp the students were taught different recipes. Ms Martovich said the campers made chicken and vegetable kabobs, French potato salad, gelatin with blueberries, and an orange lime slushy on August 3.

Each day the campers also finished by playing a round of Chopped, inspired by the Food Network television show with the same name. For the game, students worked in pairs or individually to challenge themselves in making dishes of their choice.

Camper Katelyn Zaniewski, 12, said the favorite thing she made all week was honey chicken, and camper Arden Hildenbrand, 12, said "the bread," a honey whole wheat bread, was her favorite. Arden also liked making tilapia with a lemon herb sauce.

Rebecca Filiato, Mia Martovich, and Cailee Harvey assisted Ms Martovich with running the camp. The camp was open to students between 8 and 12 years old.
