Four Vehicles Involved In Flagpole Intersection Crash
An accident involving four SUVs occurred at the flagpole intersection of Main Street, Church Hill Road, and West Street at about 7:07 pm on June 20.
Police said motorist Edward Monarch, 87, of Little Compton, R.I., who was driving a 2014 Buick Encore SUV westward on Church Hill Road, stopped at a stop sign, as motorist Eugene Kallivrousis, 23, of 52 Georges Hill Road was driving a 2007 Nissan Murano SUV northward on Main Street.
The Buick then attempted to make a left turn onto southbound Main Street, but drove in front of the approaching Nissan, resulting in the Buick and Nissan colliding, police said.
After that impact, the Buick continued moving and then struck a traffic sign, after which the Buick hit a parked unoccupied 2013 Honda Pilot SUV, pushing that vehicle into a parked unoccupied 2007 Honda Pilot SUV, according to police.
The Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported Edward Monarch and Buick passenger Arlene Monarch, 84, of Little Compton to Danbury Hospital for medical evaluations, police said.
Newtown Hook & Ladder volunteer firefighters responded to the incident.
First Assistant Fire Chief Jason Rivera, who served as incident commander, said firefighters disconnected the automotive batteries of vehicles that had front-end damage due to the accident in order to prevent fires from occurring.
Also, firefighters spread absorbent materials to isolate automotive fluids that had spilled on the ground due to the crash, he said.
Main Street was briefly closed to traffic to allow a tow truck to remove a damaged vehicle, he said.
Edward Monarch received an infraction for failure to obey a stop sign, police said.
