Police Reports | August 29-September 16, 2014
Assault
Police received a complaint about noon on September 15 in which a female told them that she was running on Dinglebrook Lane that day, near the Brookfield town line, when a passing southbound male motorcyclist made intentional physical contact with her using his hand. The female was not injured, police said.
Police are investigating and ask anyone with knowledge of the incident to contact them at the police station at 203-426-5841.
Motorcycle
At about 1:37 pm on September 14 on westbound Berkshire Road, near its intersection with Old Mill Road, motorcyclist Martin Clark, 40, of 236 Berkshire Road, who was riding a 2009 Harley-Davidson, struck the rear end of a 2009 Toyota Prius driven by Robert Schmidt, 69, of 11 Serenity Lane, police said.
There were no injuries. Police said they gave Clark a written warning for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.
Theft From Store
Police report they received a call earlier this month from the Big Y supermarket at Newtown Shopping Village at 6 Queen street informing them that a shoplifting theft had occurred at the store about 8:15 pm on August 20 in which someone stole more than $217 worth of Breath Right-brand nasal strips. The devices are used to help people breathe properly during sleep.
The store provided police with a surveillance photo which shows a male who is a suspect in the theft.
Police ask anyone with knowledge of who stole the nasal devices to contact Officer William Hull at the police station at 203-426-5841.
Juvenile Marijuana
Police said they received a report from school officials concerning drug activity at Newtown High School about noon on September 10.
Police said school officials told them that they believed that a student had a small amount of marijuana in a backpack.
After investigating, police charged that student, who is under age 18, with possession of less than one-half ounce of marijuana.
The person was released from police custody on a written promise to appear in Danbury Juvenile Court on September 29, police said. Because the person charged in under age 18, police did not disclose an identity.
Berkshire Road
Motorist Neil Craven, 19, of New Fairfield was driving a 2003 Ford Taurus sedan eastward on Berkshire Road, west of Zoar Road, about 12:02 am on September 13, police said.
Police report that Craven told them that a deer had run onto the road as he was traveling on a curve, after which he swerved to the left to avoid it, but lost control of the vehicle and went off the left road shoulder, striking an embankment.
The Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps responded to the scene to check on Craven and a passenger as a precaution, police said. Sandy Hook volunteer firefighters also responded.
Police said they issued Craven a written warning for a motor vehicle violation.
MV Charges
Police report that motorist Robert L. Harris, III, 43, of Monroe, who was driving a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV about 5 pm on September 12 in the parking lot of Sand Hill Plaza at 228 South Main Street, backed into a parked 2011 Chevrolet Camaro. There were no injuries.
After investigating, police charged Harris with driving with a suspended license, driving an unregistered vehicle, and driving without automotive insurance. Harris was released on a written promise to appear in court on September 26, police said.
Highway Crash
State police said motorist Timothy Chong, 18, of Derwood, Md., who was driving a 2013 Subaru vehicle eastward on Interstate 84, about 500 feet east of Exit 11, veered to the right into some metallic guardrailing at about 2 am on September 13.
Ambulance personnel evaluated Chong and a passenger for possible minor injuries, state police said.
State police said they verbally warned Chong for failure to maintain the travel lane.
Ramp Accident
Motorist Lori Harris, 48, of 213 Sugar Street, who was driving a 2007 Honda Fit SUV about 4:30 pm on September 13 on eastbound Interstate 84’s Exit 10 on-ramp, lost control of the vehicle and struck some guardcables along the right road shoulder, state police said.
There were no injuries. Harris was verbally warned for traveling too fast for conditions, state police said.
I-84 Collision
Motorist Aquib Hossain, 22, of 5 Bobcat Lane was driving a 1995 Toyota Camry sedan on westbound Interstate 84’s Exit 10 on-ramp about 5:55 pm on September 13, when the vehicle went out of control and struck some guardcabling along the right road shoulder, state police said.
There were no injuries. Hossain received an infraction for traveling too fast for conditions, state police said.
Exit 11
A two-vehicle accident occurred about 6:17 pm on September 12 on the Exit 11 off-ramp near its intersection with Wasserman Way, state police said.
In that incident, Francesco Ferreri, 64, of Seymour, who was driving a 2006 Ford F-150 pickup truck, struck the rear end of 2010 Infiniti EX-35 SUV driven by Sean Smedley, 46, of Middletown, state police said.
There were no injuries. Ferreri received a written warning for unsafe movement, state police said.
Honda Accident
State police said motorist George Tacuri, 20, of Danbury, who was driving a 1999 Honda Civic in heavy traffic on eastbound Interstate 84 near Exit 9 at about 2:44 pm on September 8, lost control of the vehicle, resulting in an unspecified accident. Tacuri was not injured. State police said they warned Tacuri for failure to drive in the established lane.
Highway Collision
During heavy traffic conditions at about 7:36 am on September 4, motorist Chelsea Massimin, 25, of Southbury, who was driving a 2012 Honda Civic westward on Interstate 84, about 1,000 feet west of Exit 9, struck the rear end of a 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe SUV driven by Maura Barbino, 47, of Woodbury, state police said.
There were no injuries. Massimin received an infraction for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart, state police said.
Point O’ Rocks Road
Motorist Haakon Sorenson, 21, of 160 Boggs Hill Road was driving a 2012 Mazda 3 sedan westward on Point O’ Rocks Road about 4:36 pm on September 6, police said.
Motorist Wendy Margules, 71, of 4 Merlin’s Lane was driving a 2013 Lexus RX-350 SUV eastward there, police said.
Sorenson applied the Mazda’s brakes and the Mazda went off the road and struck a large rock, resulting in the Mazda rolling onto its side and colliding with the Lexus, police said.
There were no injuries. Sorenson received a written warning for traveling too fast for conditions, police said.
Big Y
Police report they received a call from the Big Y supermarket at Newtown Shopping Village at 6 Queen Street about 7:22 pm on September 15 regarding an alleged case of shoplifting.
Police said they responded to the store to investigate, after which they charged Angel Faust, 19, of 19 South Main Street with sixth-degree larceny.
Following processing, police said they released her on a written promise to appear in court on September 30.
Truck Hits Rails
Motorist Andrea Urban, 49, of Trumbull was driving a 2006 Toyota Tundra pickup truck southward near 8 Mt Pleasant Road about 10 pm on September 13, when the vehicle slid on wet pavement, crossed over the opposite travel lane and then struck some guardrailing, police said.
There were no injuries. Urban received an infraction for traveling too fast for conditions, police said.
Sandy Hook Collision
Police report a two-vehicle accident occurred on Bradley Lane, near its intersection with Great Ring Road, about 7 pm on September 16.
In that incident, motorist Joanne MacDonald, 70, of 28 Bradley Lane, who was driving a 2005 Dodge Caravan minivan, struck a 2010 Ford E-250 van driven by Miguel Morales, 33, of 31 Bradley Lane, police said. Police said they issued MacDonald a written warning for failure to drive to the right.
The Boulevard
About 10:46 pm on September 13, motorist Kristopher Kauffman, 24, of Enfield was driving a 2004 Nissan Sentra sedan on The Boulevard, near its intersection with Hall Lane, when he lost control of the vehicle on the wet road and collided with some metal guardrailing, police said.
There were no injuries. Police said they verbally warned Kauffman for traveling too fast for conditions.
