NHS Senior Named Finalist For
The Barton L. Weller Scholarship
Newtown High School senior Shane Wurtz, son of Brenda and Jeff Wurtz of Sandy Hook, was selected as a finalist to compete for the $12,000 scholarship in honor of the late Barton L. Weller, founder of Witramon, Incorporated in Monroe, and who made the award possible.
Established in 1977, the scholarship encourages academic excellence in a substantial independent research or study project. The scholarship is open to full-time high school seniors at, Newtown, Joel Barlow, Masuk, Shelton, and Trumbull High Schools.
Entrants were required to submit proposals for projects in any field of study in which they have an interest. Finalists were selected on the basis of originality, format of the proposal, project potential and care with which the proposal and its planed implementation has been thought through.
Each finalist received $200 to help defray expenses during the five-month project period. Prior to the Awards Dinner, scheduled for May 3 at Fairfield University, the scholarship recipient will be announced. The scholarship finalist will be announced at the dinner.
Shaneâs project is called âClub Website: âDefine Yourself.ââ The objective of his project is to create a website consisting of all of NHSâs active clubs, their purposes, place and time of meetings, and their upcoming events or activities.
