William A. Maher
William A. Maher, 81, husband of the late Marguerite (Dwyer) Maher of Sawmill Ridge Road, Newtown, died unexpectedly at his home August 23.
He was born in Woodside, L.I., N.Y., May 4, 1920, son of the late William P. and Gertrude (Egan) Maher. He was a graduate of St Augustine High School in Queens, N.Y., and St Johnâs University.
A resident of Newtown since 1953, Mr Maher was an advertising executive at McCallâs Magazine for 39 years, retiring in 1987.
During World War II, Mr Maher served in the US Army as a tech sergeant. He participated in the invasion of Normandy, followed by service in the Northern France, Ardennes, Central Europe, and Rhineland battles.
He was the recipient of the Bronze Star medal. He was also the recipient of two Purple Hearts for injuries received in the line of battle.
In 1992 the citizens of Le Maire de Sainte-Marie-du-Mont, France, made Mr Maher an honorary citizen in recognition of his division liberating Utah Beach.
Mr Maher was a communicant and usher at St Rose of Lima Church.
He is survived by three daughters, Eileen Grayce of Yarmouth, Me., and Jane Wheeler and Sheila Maher, both of Newtown; one sister, Rita Szenher of New Hyde Park, N.Y.; and two grandchildren, Colby Wheeler and Sarah Grayce.
Funeral services were held August 27 from the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street, Newtown, and at St Rose of Lima Church for a Mass of Christian Burial.
Interment with full military honors was at St Rose Cemetery.
