Senior services for Newtown seniors are available at the Multipurpose Building on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. The Senior Center is under the auspices of the Commission on Aging. The center is run by Senior Services Director Marilyn Place. For more information about programs offered at the Senior Center call 270-4310.

You may drop in at the Senior Center weekdays between 9 am and 4 pm. A hot meal is served at noon, for which you must reserve three days in advance.

Newtown has daily door-to-door minibus service Monday through Friday. Buses also run all day from the Senior Center to Sand Hill Plaza. On Fridays, the bus alternates between rides to Danbury Fair Mall and Berkshire Plaza in Danbury (to Walmart Route 6). Cost is 65¢ each way for the Sand Hill Plaza trip, 75¢ each way for out of town. Call 748-2511 TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE to book a ride and get the out-of-town Friday schedule.

 

This Week’s Programs

*COMMISSION ON AGING will meet on Monday, November 16, at 5 pm.

*BINGO will be Thursday, November 17, at 1 pm.

*AARP Driver Safety Program will be Thursday and Friday, November 19 and 20, from 12:30 to 4:30 pm. This is a refresher course. You must attend both days. AARP members, $12 and nonmembers, $14.

Upcoming Programs

*BINGO will be Thursday, November 25, at 1 pm.

*The Newtown Senior Center will be CLOSED on Thursday and Friday, November 26 and 27, for Thanksgiving.

*LARRY AYCE will perform old-time and new favorites to sing-along and/or dance to on Monday, November 30, at 1 pm.

*Senior Star KARAOKE REGIONAL COMPETITION, hosted by the Newtown Senior Center, Wednesday, December 2, at 1 pm, includes area senior centers. Three members from each area will compete and the winner will go on to the state competition. Come enjoy the music.

 *SAVE THE DATE: Tuesday, December 8, Annual Christmas Party at The Waterview, $35 per person for gourmet buffet, champagne toast, music and entertainment. Reservations are being taken now.

*Visit MOHEGAN SUN on Thursday, December 10. Depart at 8 am. Cost is $30.

Recurring Activities

*YOGA classes are Monday and Thursday at 10:30 am.

*Billiards room; poker/card room; ping pong; and Wii bowling, golf, tennis, and baseball.

*Wii BOWLING, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday afternoons.

*MAKE CARDS FOR OUR TROOPS every Tuesday from 10 am to noon and 1 to 3 pm.

*BEGINNERS BRIDGE LESSONS on Wednesday, 9:30 am with Mary Matern.

*Iris card folding CRAFT CLASS every Thursday at 1 pm.

*MOVIE DAY Fridays at 2 pm. Enjoy a good “favorite” movie with a friend.

Monday: AM cards, hatha yoga, exercise, PM chorus group, weaving, exercise.

Tuesday: AM cards for troops, line dancing; PM Tai Chi, movie.

Wednesday: AM bridge, exercise; PM exercise.

Thursday: AM hatha yoga, cards; PM iris card folding craft class, mah jongg, Scrabble, Wii bowling.

Friday: AM mah jongg, Quilts of Valor, exercise class, PM Ecumenical Bible study group, knitting, movie.

Menu For Week Of

November 16–20

Monday: Shrimp and corn chowder, cold cut grinder with turkey, ham, cheese, lettuce and tomato, mustard and mayo, diet fruited Jell-O with whipped topping.

Tuesday: Cheese baked ziti, parmesan cheese, sausage, fresh zucchini, Italian bread, seasonal fresh fruit.

Wednesday: Lemon chicken, rice and beans, broccoli cuts, pumpernickel bread, coffee cake.

Thursday: Thanksgiving Special: Roast turkey breast, giblet gravy, savory stuffing, cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes, seasoned peas, carrots & corn medley, corn bread, pumpkin pie.

And for planning ahead —

Monday: November 23: Chicken stew served over rice, chopped spinach, buttermilk biscuit, apricot halves.

Tuesday: November 24: Tomato Florentine soup, tuna boats on hot dog roll, coleslaw, pickle chips, chocolate chip cookie.
