Three Vehicle Chain Reaction

Three vehicles were involved in a chain-reaction accident on eastbound Interstate 84, about one-quarter mile west of Exit 11, at about 5:20 pm on March 17, state police report.

In the accident, motorist Jessica Brown, 39, of Middletown, who was diving a 2012 Nissan Rogue SUV, struck the rear end of a 2012 Chevrolet Express van driven by James Barber, 56, of Waterbury, pushing the Chevrolet into the rear end of a Ford F-150 pickup truck driven by Carl Bishop, 26, of Woodbury, state police said.

There were no injuries. Brown received an infraction for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart, state police said.

Sandy Hook Accident

Police report that at about 4 pm on March 16, motorist Amber Klinko, 26, of Fairfield, who was driving a 2015 Nissan Rogue SUV westward on Berkshire Road near Lone Oak Meadows, stopped for traffic conditions, after which the Nissan was struck from behind by westbound motorist Schuyler MacDonald, 22, of New Windsor, N.Y., who was driving a 2005 Honda Civic auto.

There were no injuries. Police said they issued MacDonald a written warning for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

SUV vs Building

At about 10:34 am on March 18, while parking a 2009 Honda CR-V SUV in the parking lot at Newtown Veterinary Specialists at 52 Church Hill Road, motorist Helene Silver, 86, of Washington, Conn., apparently pressed on the accelerator pedal instead of the brake pedal and the vehicle then mounted a curb, struck a parking sign and a lighting fixture, and then hit an exterior wall of the veterinary practice, police said.

Both the vehicle and the building were damaged by the impact, according to police. There were no injuries.

Lane Change

Police report that at about 9 pm on March 15, motorist Marina Renzi, 17, of 51 West Street, who was driving a 2006 Nissan X-Terra SUV on Berkshire Road, near its intersection with Wasserman Way, attempted to change travel lanes, but in doing so the Nissan struck a 2007 Honda CR-V SUV driven by Leon Canfield, 81, of 16 Pine Street.

There were no injuries. Police report they issued Renzi an infraction for making an unsafe movement.

Hawleyville Collision

Motorist Jessica Wullen, 29, of Bergenfield, N.J., was driving a 2012 Honda Civic northward on Hawleyville Road, near the Exit 9 interchange of Interstate 84, at about 4 pm on March 18, as motorist Maxine Hilliard, 71, of Newington, who was driving a 2004 Acura TL sedan southward on Hawleyville Road, was attempting to make a left turn to enter the eastbound on-ramp for I-84, police said.

The two vehicles collided. There were no injuries. Police said they issued Hilliard a written warning for failure to grant the right of way.

Flagpole Intersection Accident

A two-vehicle accident occurred at the Main Street flagpole intersection about 12:15 pm on March 16.

Police said motorist Emily Vonick, 21, of Stratford, who was driving a 2016 Ford sedan westward on Church Hill Road, was attempting to make a right turn onto northbound Main Street and then slowed for traffic conditions, after which the Ford was struck from behind by motorist Linda Rose Rondina, 67, of East Haven, who was driving a 2013 Subaru Impreza westward on Church Hill Road.

There were no injuries. Rondina received a written warning for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart, police said.

Main Street Crash

At about 4 pm on March 18, motorist Lisa Nobes, 32, of Monroe, who was driving a 2013 Honda CR-V SUV northward near 20 Main Street, stopped for traffic conditions and was then struck from behind by northbound motorist Kenneth Kopsco, 73, of 4 Overlook Drive, who was driving a 2002 Volkswagen Passat sedan, according to police.

There were no injuries. Police said they issued a written warning to Kopsco for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Interstate Collision

State police said that at about 11 am on March 19, motorist Florence Zeim, 69, of Westtown, N.Y., who was driving a 2012 Volkswagen Passat sedan eastward on Interstate 84, west of Exit 9, was attempting to change travel lanes, and in doing so she sideswiped motorist Christine Bighinatti, 23, of Rocky Hill, who was driving a 2014 Dodge Dart.

There were no injuries. State police said they verbally warned Zeim for making an unsafe lane change.

Glen Road

A two-vehicle accident occurred on Glen Road, near its intersection with Pine Street, about 7:13 pm on March 21, police report.

Police said motorist Brian Jappinen, 40, of Southbury, who was driving a 2014 Subaru Crosstrek northward on Glen Road, stopped for traffic conditions, after which the Subaru was struck from behind by northbound motorist Paul Albanesi, 27, of 23 Beechwood Drive, who was driving a 2013 Subaru Impreza.

There were no injuries. Albanesi received a written warning for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart, according to police.

DUI Arrest

Police report they received a complaint about 2 pm on March 22 concerning a suspicious vehicle that was parked in a residential neighborhood at the intersection of Cobblestone Lane and Ashford Lane.

Police said they went there to investigate and found James Storms, 45, of Carmel, N.Y., sleeping within the vehicle which was running and in "Drive" gear.

Police report they charged Storms with driving under the influence and with driving without a license. After processing, police released Storms on $500 bail for an April 5 court appearance.

Protective Order

At about 9:30 am on March 22, police received a complaint concerning a suspicious person near 31 Pecks Lane, which is an industrial property, so they responded to investigate.

After investigating, police charged Douglas Allan, 66, of Monroe with violation of a protective order. Following processing, police released Allan on $500 bail for an April 5 court appearance.

Failure to Appear

Police said that on the night of March 22, they served a warrant against Angela Evertez, 41, of 183 Sugar Street, Apt A, lodging a charge of second-degree failure to appear in court.

The charge stems from a January incident, police said. Police report they held Evertez on $500 bail for a March 23 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.

Evertez has pleaded not guilty to both the failure to appear charge and also to the underlying charge of breach of peace. She was released from court on March 23 on $500 bail for an April 13 court appearance.

Flagpole Intersection

Police report a two-vehicle accident at the Main Street flagpole intersection about 5 pm on March 22.

Police said motorist Danniella Tompos, 21, of New Milford, who was driving a 2003 Mercedes-Benz E-320 sedan, was traveling southward on Main Street and was passing on the right a line of stopped southbound vehicles.

At that time, motorist Stacia Tice Nicholson, 48, of 2 King Street, who was driving a 2015 GMC Acadia SUV, traveled westward from Church Hill Road and was moving across Main Street in seeking to reach West Street, when the Mercedes and the GMC collided, police said.

There were no injuries. Police said they verbally warned Tompos for passing on the right.

South Main Street

About 9:23 pm on March 23, motorist Richard Smith, 23, of Bridgeport, who was driving a 2007 Honda Accord southward on South Main Street, slowed in preparing to make a left turn to enter a gas station driveway at 151 South Main Street, but was then struck from behind by southbound motorist Raeven Keene, 22, of Monroe, who was driving a 2005 Hyundai Sonata sedan, according to police.

There were no injuries. Keene was verbally warned for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart, police said.

Newtown Police Department will be taking a no-excuses approach to seatbelt law enforcement, writing citations day and night, during the current Click It Or Ticket seatbelt use campaign.
